Maev (sorceress), Corius (warrior gone trader, likes to drink), Moineau (young thief), Naorl (shape-shifter, banned from his people), ... N° 6 is not there yet, I think. Next part is about the war against the Great Forest, for which the other kingdoms join forces, even though they don't like each other separately. The writing is quite accessible, with relevant themes: racism, politics, nature, cultural differences...

First part done. Presentation of the characters, of the setting. 5 kingdoms against the 6th, a magical forest, which doesn't wage war, but seems to be in the way of the others for some dark reason. 6 characters are drawn into the forest to help its people (elves, dragons, sylphides, ...) against the upcoming war. One character, Llir the bard, is like a mix of Cugel (Jack Vance) & Rincewind (Pratchett). Others are...

Mixed feelings. I like it and I don't like it; dense writing. Joe Abercrombie light, several characters, not always easy to remember who's who and why they ended up where they are now.

Slow reading these past days. First half of the book was good to very good, very exciting, original, ... Over halfway, it became a bit tedious and weird: all of a sudden, Rhuys (main character) has all sorts of tools at his disposal, finds the way to this and that address, etc. It's like pieces of the story were taken out for the sake of progress. So, yes, the second half puts a damper on the fun of reading.

So, that's what the pearls are for (spoiler: truth, but don't take too many of them). Kunti (Shakti's daughter) will continue to play a very important role, I gather. Oh yes, no sign of Meijo at this point, although he gets mentioned in Shakti's story.

Slow reading at the moment, especially Shakti's story. Damn. But once the group continues its quest, the reading gets better. Interesting stuff, though: Ogh-Qui-Soupire and his bats: reminds me of Odin and his ravens Huginn and Muninn. Also, the Chamber of Discussion (or something like that): inside a tree's trunk: nobody gets out until disputes are settled. And what a turnaround regarding the death of captain Rana.

This spring will be filled with mainly French books, but to break that flow a little, a DL-novel is much suited to provide a lighter read. So far, good stuff. Not awesome, but it's what I need at this point.
