"Book 2: started good, even better than the 1st. Takes place 15 years later (you must have read the 1st volume), again focus on our students (now adults). Ismaël is a "Fréquence" (or head of one, like an emperor). Still, some uneven bits, gaps for the reader to fill in. Characters still indistinguishable, no proper personality (to me). Again, not consistent enough to "fully" enjoy the story. 240 pages to go for V2." Nov 24, 2025 11:09PM

"Started reading this back in October 2025, shortly after it came out. But circumstances were soon too unfavourable, so I picked up the book again, restarted it in December. Going smoother now. Wonderfully written, but what a throat-gripping tale. Not something to get happy from, but a clear reflection of the dark side (and resilience) of mankind in situations of social and ecological collapse. Food for present times." Jan 15, 2026 01:08AM

"Yes, still going... very slowly, also because you have to keep your mind to it, even if it's a bit of a page-turner. Circumstances just don't allow me to go faster, also as other books come in-between." Jun 10, 2024 12:40AM

“Life is terrifying. None of us have a rule book. None of us know what we're doing here. So, the easiest way to stare reality in the face and not utterly lose your shit is to believe that you have control over it. If you believe you have control, then you believe you're at the top. And if you're at the top, then people who aren't like you... well, they've got to be somewhere lower, right? Every species does this. Does it again and again and again. Doesn't matter if they do it to themselves, or another species, or someone they created.”
Becky Chambers, A Closed and Common Orbit

Arthur C. Clarke
“Like every human being, Alvin was in some measure a machine, his actions predetermined by his inheritance. That did not alter his need for understanding and sympathy, nor did it render him immune to loneliness or frustration. To his own people, he was so unaccountable a creature that they sometimes forgot that he still shared their emotions.”
Arthur C. Clarke, The City and the Stars

Richard Powers
“People aren’t the apex species they think they are. Other creatures-bigger, smaller, slower, faster, older, younger, more powerful-call the shots, make the air, and eat sunlight. Without them, nothing.”
Richard Powers, The Overstory

“Buddha’s words: A tree is a wondrous thing that shelters, feeds, and protects all living things. It even offers shade to the axmen who destroy it.”

“The best arguments in the world won't change a person's mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.”
Richard Powers, The Overstory
