Now, there was a chapter that was actually alright. Decently written.

This reads like a political history of the Church. Chadwick didn't mention even one miracle of St. Benedict, when they're the bulk of the saints biography.

Valens put eighty presbyters on a boat before setting it on fire, and Valentinan I kept two pet bears to feed people to.

It would be easier to be invested in the story if the characters weren't irresponsible criminals. Also, there's too many pop culture references.

Paul cheats, doesn't tip, and is a racist. Who needs rounded characters if you can have Paul?

The pacing is too slow. Is this book trying to be psychological horror? It seems to be. Also, too much sex. They can't go a page without sex. Or snark, for that matter. Still hoping that's just a lame beginning.

How can you not love this story?

I like how Father Lichtenbergs biography and the Kulturkampf are treated together
