I haven't touched this book in like, 6 months, but I'm back in it now, boys! Monty's kind of annoying but kind of endearing. Would die for Felicity. Percy must be protected.

SHRIEKS. I'm going to make a guess right now that this "society of men" has the wrong idea and that it's an authorial choice that they assume turning the girls against eachother and having the beast eat them is the way to defeat them, because this highlights the misogyny in their lack of faith in that the girls can defeat him on their own and instead the rock is giving them the ability to defeat it! THE FEMINISM !!!!

Genuinely one of my least favorite tropes is parental figures and authority figures condescending and refusing to believe children/teens. It's so frustrating and annoying as a reader.

Val's relationship with the collector dude really in some ways reminds me of an abusive relationship, what with how she doubts who she is without him, and is too afraid to leave because of it.

You know, last year was not a good reading year. For whatever reason. I just lost my reading mojo, after being someone who could finish a 500 page book in one sitting, I was struggling to pin down my energy long enough to read 50 pages. I don't know if I'm capable of doing that again, but I know I want to try and I'm going to do my damned best to focus my energy into this being a good reading year again!

That scene with the horse hair was so disgustingly good. I really don't know how I feel about Val so far; she seems interesting as a character, for sure, but as a person I'm inclined to dislike her. There's also something so off about everyone on this damn island, like even Zoey's dad is like... suspect af.

If Val and Marion don't like, get together I'll be pissed tbh bc those two? Gay.

I love this so much. I'm worried Maven 2.0 is going to betray Nomi though.... but I'm just loving how both sisters are pulling through for each other ugh, sibling goals.

Ooooooh, it's getting REALLY good now! I love how the book like basically created its own fiction beyond just, yk, fairytale lore. The whole mystery of Althea Proserpine really just reels you all in. I get the feeling this book would make an amazing ya movie adaptation, or a netflix series.

So far, so good. It's got a very like... dreamy quality to it, but in certain ways it almost feels like it's trying too hard, but that could just be the author's style. Nothing really of importance has happened so far, it's been just setting up, etc.
