Another surprising chapter. Nearing the end....

We're nearing the end, but are still plot twists popping up. Even though I'm usually good with tropes, I have no idea where this is going. I'm guessing that on balance it will be a happy ending, but I am having trouble predicting the exact parameters.

Dark times

I didn't notice this when I read these books a decade or so ago, but very interesting seeing Miss Macalariat and essentially "trans bathroom issues" due to the way dwarves are handled on the Discworld.

Things continue to spiral out of control

Great metaphor for the disappointment that those against you aren't simply missing information. They truly believe they're right and you're wrong.

So far things are progressing slowly. I'm left wondering about red herrings and potential betrayals. Still, I'm very curious to see how things wrap up.

Based on how long novels usually take to write, this almost certainly wasn't written in the wake of the 2020 Protests (but maybe it was?). Either way, it it very much reminds me of the ways we subvert protest movements.

Decisions delayed and a bittersweet reunion

Time to finish up this trilogy.

This one's REALLY good so far

I have theories on what's going on here. I can't wait to see how it pans out.

Seems like a more straight-forward detective story. Enjoying it so far.

At this point in the story, I both find it a compelling and masterful story (while recognizing there is probably some stuff that was more OK back when written and perhaps problematic now? I am not Japanese, so I am not sure) and also appreciate how well of an adaptation the recent Hulu adaptation was.

Intriguing idea

I don't know if it's a quirk of a direct translation from japanese, or the kind of schlock that was allowed back when this book was published, but the characters constantly saying "so sorry" is a little grating. Otherwise I'm enjoying the book.

So much world-building. I love world-building, but I'm also tensely waiting for the end of the mystery!

As usual, McGuire really knows how to make her protagonists suffer

The story has barely gotten started, but the interaction with the first priest is slightly different from the TV show in an interesting way

I can't stand the suspense of not being able to predict where this is going. But McClellan has done a great job here

a slight lull in the action

Happy that Vlora's journey of growth was not what it seemed at the beginning of the book. That would have been quite tiresome.

I can't believe we're only halfway done! I feel like so much plot has happened!
