Either this is a setup for a sequel or there's going to be a VERY short part after the climax....running out of pages here...

I love the complication in Hrathen's plan. This thing keeps getting better and better.

Telegraph! Hurray for old tech in future SF! Oh Older, you're making a life-long fan of me.

Scary debate. Nice post-debate. Malka Older is definitely a pro at writing a story I don't want to stop reading. (But I have to...life calls)

The head priest is playing a dangerous game given how amped up his religion is against the Elantrians.

Then again, this section has a lot of deadly games being played. Sirini basically brought out the nuclear option. Unlikely she'll have the upper hand again with the king.

After listening to a podcast yesterday about how the current US government is poised to take advantage of disaster to ram through policies we'd normally be against (which is not the same as saying they're inviting or causing them), the Earthquake chapter is chilling - espeically since Malka Older seems to have predicted evertying else AND it is a POLITICAL thriller, so definitely expected that the govts will try.

Why book is depressing: "The new Heritage coalition ... ignored the accessibility of Information, produced their standard glossy misinformation, and not only took the Supermajority but won centenals where, analysts agreed, it was demonstrably not in the interests of the people living there to vote for them...In the second elections...people continued to vote in ways that were highly irrational from any standpoint."

So there's one government with lots of factions. Many of them seem tied to corporations. The tagline on the front page comparing it to Snow Crash seems apt. From what I can tell our two protagonists are someone working for a campaign and someone working for the Internet to keep Fake News from being a thing in this world.

Something tells me this is going to be depressing in light of the 2016 USA election. That said, the action and the world building are very interesting. I'm still waiting for my ubiquitous and useful Google Glass-like tech that all the characters so far are using.

Frustrating to realize how much story is left given what's happened so far. But then again, that's par for the course with this genre. The hero usually gets the item at some point, but there's still a lot more story left.
