Can't tell if it's the cold I have or the prose, but reading this is making me feel pleasantly disoriented.

Didn't realize this is set in 2021--gotta finish it before it's no longer topical!

Feel a bit starry to be starting this one, but the slang is real horrorshow once you pony.

Easy reading so far. The main character appears to have been plucked out of the 21st century and put into the 1950s, though, which dampens the creep factor of the gothic elements for me.

Somehow it feels wrong to read this quickly--like I want to embody Kublai Khan and hear about the cities over time

Trying to figure out if the chapter organization is a real meter or not.

Cynical but inspiring. Sometimes their ideas seem muddled, but the spirit is right.

- every character is either morally bankrupt or moral to the point of stupidity
- provincial scenes all drag
- join a new group of people (publishers, playwrights, journalists, scalpers, etc.) and someone will inevitably monologue about how you need to take the advantage when you can get it
- just think Balzac explains too much
- some of this may be translation losing the prose
- still fairly fun
