Not sure why I'm having so much trouble getting through this. I'm finding the final book less compelling. Maybe it's the focus on the rebellion? Or the reframing of scenes from the other books (which does get a bit repetitive)? It's unclear, but hopefully I'll manage to finish it this week.

Did Bret Easton Ellis ever work in marketing? He writes ad copy word salad like a pro

This is the most difficult I've ever found it to get into a 19th century novel. Even the most long-winded Balzac novel grabbed me faster. I'm going to keep plugging on and see if I can break through Thackeray's satire to actually care about what's happening.

Really bizarre and tasteless to have a list of victims of violent crimes described as a "cast of characters" in the opening of this book. Afraid it's soured my outlook on the whole piece a bit, probably unfairly. McNamara likely didn't make that decision, as the work was pieced together and published posthumously.
