Ninety-five pages to go.
For a book that's moved so slowly, can a lot actually happen in ninety-five pages?

I like this story. I really do.
But the characters mean nothing to me and the writing is just average.
I think I'm reading this wrong...

Book: I'm tiny, you can read me so fast!
Me: You're right! *checks out*
Book: *takes nine freaking paragraphs to describe some dead flowers*
Me: ... I've been had.

Full disclosure, I am enjoying this. The story is great, the color of the prose is just getting my nerves.

I plan to read this lovely thing to get my reading mojo back, finish Libriomancer (which is NERDVANA but I'm in a tiny little slump...) and then get on the rest of these library books.

Doug TenNapel's art is just amazing. The art specs in this review will not be able to do it justice.

Isaac is so... Different from your typical urban fantasy hero.
He's a lot less snarky, and he seems a lot more melancholy.
I don't altogether hate it.

Happy fathers' day to my own padre and my brother who is a daddy, plus all the dads I know on GR, but I'd like to wish the happiest of fathers' days to the one and only Michael Carpenter.
A father first and a Knight second, Michael loves and supports his kids no matter what paths they choose, and has been a father figure and shoulder to lean (or cry) on for everyone who needed one, including Harry Dresden.

What book characters do you identify with the most?


For me, I'd have to say Ponyboy Curtis (of The Outsiders) because of where I live/my relationship with my older brother, and Molly Carpenter (of The Dresden Files) because of my curiousity and my temper 😅

This is an independent book, partially a culture study partially a protest novel, published by a university.
My library actually got it. And displayed SEVERAL copies of it, proclaiming us young'ns should read it.
I realize why now.
For us it wasn't strip mining.
It was fracking.
I am absurdly happy to reading this depressing-ass book.

WOW.
This has done an absolute 180 on me. I wasn't impressed and even dreading the rest of the book when I started it at first, but now, with less than 100 pages to go, I'm just... I'm not sure how I am.
McGinnis is an extremely talented author.
Regardless of how this book ends, whether I love it or hate it, I'll read more by her

Nobody said you had to love a character to understand them and where they come from.

A little like Rot And Ruin, being a world that already fought zombie war.
It's not portrayed as having been the end of the world here, though. More like any other war. Battles, casualties, eventually an end and some history to look over.

Not terrible. Looking at three stars so far. I like the Torchers, but Josh is just freaking milktoast.

What I expected: A dark, frank book about psychopathy.

What I've been getting: That, plus sarcastic quips and situation humor between EVERY character so far.

... Not sure if this book is supposed to make me laugh.

I checked this and two other realistic fictions out from the library yesterday (Trampoline by Robert Gipe and The Female Of The Species by Mindy McGinnis) to get myself a dose of the 'real' world before I jump back into another fantasy world.

I do like realistic, S.E Hinton and Laurie Halse Anderson being my favorite authors in the genre.

The Warden was a ghost story in the original trilogy, but to have him as a living, breathing, speaking character in this one just makes him more terrifying.

Verse Chorus Verse ONE star. Would give zero.
Hide-And-Seek: Terrifying AND it recommended me a book. Five stars.
The Dark, Scary Parts and All. Lovely and chilling. Five stars.
The Flicker, The Finger, The Beat, The Sigh: Torn. Three stars for now.
Fat Girl With A Knife: ZOMBIES! :D Four stars!

The Birds Of Azalea Street: Meh. Three stars.
In The Forest Deep And Dark: Thumbs up for being inspired by something I love. Plus... Zoinks. Four stars.
Emmeline: More haunting and sad than 'scary'. Which is just as good, sometimes. Four stars.

Haven't read a short story collection in a while, and there are some authors I've been meaning to try, Marie Lu and Jay Kristoff.

I want to use ALL the metaphors in my review...
