It only took 666 pages, but I think I've figured Joyce out. The exact moment a horse appears at the end of this chapter, I knew it would soon be pooping. I wasn't disappointed!

That was a really long chapter

That last chapter - written to mirror the difficulty of childbirth - was easily the most difficult piece of text I've ever read in my lift up to this point.

After re-reading the cyclops chapter, which was impossible the first time, I can now confirm that it may be one of the greatest pieces of writing I've ever read... chapter 13 was also quite enjoyable... some fireworks... if you know what i mean...

This just isn't a well edited magazine anymore. Rena in the desert is a decent story and so is tattered veil of stars, but both fall into the been there done that category, the latter has several grammatical errors, and the 'find a cure for cancer' is just bad science...

a blow by blow adventure, but so far so good

last two issues of 6 part morninstar story were a lot better than the beginning. But still not up to the excellence of early tales.

This is like 'His Girl Friday' on speed. No clue what I'm reading. Not sure who's narrating this chapter. I'm consistently dazzled by this book about 30% of the time, and wtf'ing the book the rest of the time.

The Freshening - a solid but fairly soft punch at racial stereotyping. Enjoyed its individualized rather than pedantic perspective.

Liked Sanford story, not so much Gunn story, Skin a fun story... a good slime mold story.

Chapter 11 is a good solid chapter, loaded with sex written in such a way as to be virtually impossible to identify as sex. Predecessor to modernity's repulsion with the word 'moist'.

Huge war in heaven with a ton of moving parts... I find over complicated and not super compelling - at least comparatively - so far

Loved 'Rain West of Marfa'. All of these are good, but some feel thin. Almost like a diary of images, but without a huge punch.

Barn in the Wild was great. Teacher and _____ good and creepy, leave you wanting (in a good way). Our Town's Monster didn't work as well for me

Absolutely brutal chapter. It's like Joyce heard me say I was finding a comfortable rhythm and was like, 'oh yeah?', and rose from the dead, and rewrote the chapter in my copy so as to make it unintelligible. You win this round JJ. Well played.

At the Mountains of Madness - all in all a good tale, if silly in parts.

Didn't realize how hilarious this was going to be. Here's a great line in a chapter all about eating (and screwing, kinda) and biological processes: 'a ravenous terrier choked up a thick knuckly cud on the cobblestones and lapped it up with new zest.'

Reading this at the same time as I'm reading At the Mountains of Madness by HPL, while in quarantine, is proving to be a recipe for disaster...

Okay, I've started and restarted this a few times now, but I think I got the right rhythm now. I'm going all the way man. The last two chapters were like, as easy as Pynchon man. Bring it on!

The Murderer - strange pacing, from the translation or intentional, not sure, but captivating. 3.5
Oceans - very relevant to many aspects of my life right now, very interesting and moving
Carl Phillips - amazing interview. My heart is racing.

Ineffectual Tribute to Len - great story about a fleeting friendship and time and death. 3.75 stars
Brandon Som - great multi-lingual poem

Credit to my nation - meh. All the difference, better, but still pretty meh.
