I'm not even a major hiker but this stuff is unputdownable. Unbelievable expeditions up to Everest and Rainier and also down to caves. I was up until 5 reading this one session.

to no one’s surprise this is fairly grim

while it may not be "of consciousness" i think Saramago better deserves the "stream" moniker than other so-called modernist writers. his way of writing in such a constant "stream" perfectly captures the chaos descending on this town and it is riveting
