This book is on one level, exactly my jam, and on another level, contains such an accurate portrait of a deeply annoying leftwing dude that I want to stab myself in the brain. Good job, Eleanor.

Did I finally pick up this modern classic that's been on my TBR list for ages because I read that Jacob Elordi is going to be in the TV adaptation? Did I learn that information from a horribly stupid news item about an alleged Sydney barfight? Look, at least I'm reading.

Did I finally pick up this much beloved classic because it's referenced in every review of Saltburn? Let a girl live.

These characters' bad decisions are SO stressful, like, Uncut Gems stressful.

I had the mistaken idea this was a book of music criticism -- if there's any art form it's most about, it's dance -- but it's a wider look at culture.

I'm kind of annoyed that the euphemistic jacket copy made me think this was about something else. (I thought she would be filming footage for news like that Jake Gyllenhaal movie, ok??)

Not necessarily a pass based on the subject matter but I need to adjust my expectations

I don't know why this is showing the wrong edition/translation (I 'm reading the Garnett translation on audiobook) -- anyway the main thing I didn't think about when I read this 15+ years ago is how young everyone is at the start. Not just Natasha + Sonia + Nikolai but Pierre + Andrei too.

I already reread chunks of 'Visit from the Goon Squad' to remind myself who the ppl who turned up in Egan's new book did, I am not sure if I'm willing to do the same for 'The Glass House.'

I was worried this would be too heavy especially Right Now, but it's a narrative with a collective protagonist, about community formation and problem solving, and maybe just the thing I need to read.

I swear this audiobook has been going on for NINE HOURS and nothing of consequence has happened

The prologue takes up more than 3 hours of the audiobook.

The. Prologue.

(I realize that RJ mostly uses his prologues to catch up with where everybody is so it's really the first several chapters smushed together, but I still laughed when I saw this.)

When Sparrowhawk includes "the desire for unassailable safety" in his list of things that cause men to do evil. . . yeah, that hit. It's so often that people in a place of relative power and security look at anything that might challenge that security as a threat to be destroyed, no matter how many people (so often the less secure and unpowerful) will be hurt.

Okay, I feel like I'm nitpicking this book a lot but there is NO REASON for the big reveal about the main character's backstory to happen on p. 265. This is something that's been hinted at all along, it explains a lot of what's going on earlier, it could have been a prologue. And the main character, the person it happened to, is the ONLY POV character. it is a very bad structure choice.

The inherent homoeroticism of ghosthunting
