The Apple Tree - omg, sooooo boring. skimmed most of it. reminding me why I hate short story collections. 3rd person again, like The Birds. I wonder if everything du Maurier wrote in 3rd person is just unbearably dull. It was probably a mistake to start this collection, it's going to put me off ever trying her novels.

The good part of having the memory of a goldfish is that I remember none of this. The only thing left in my brain from 2014 was a vague impression of 3 of the characters, it's very nearly like reading it for the first time. I am baffled by people who retain plot and details from books they read years before.

Extremely imaginative and utterly clueless, lol. I do wish Norton was a little less stingy with their font sizes and line spacing though. Sadly few of the NCE series seem to be available as ebooks too.

It's like the entire cast is sharing one brain cell between them. 😏

So stressful! She's going to end up engaged to the vile Thorpe at this rate and nowhere a Jeeves to save her. (The dangers of reading a book where you know neither the genre conventions nor the milieu's boundaries.)

Monte Verita - 2nd story, novella really. One of those Shangri-La type stories where some mountaineer tells you about that one time he stumbled on a magical monastery. This worked much better than "The Birds". As I suspected, du Maurier is much better at first person. It's still not really my sort of thing, being more a mysterious, ambiguous, atmospheric type story, rather than plot driven. Enjoyable enough though.

FYI this book is fantastic. It's mostly examples. The examples skew more toward politician and lawyer types than I'd really prefer, but damned if they aren't superb.

Ignores the collection he's already started and picks up another one.
Well that was very unlike the movie. Narration felt a bit detached for the type of story too, but it was third person and her novels seem to be mostly first, so I'll try not to leap to conclusions.

I like Ham, he should be the main character now. Just send Henry to rehab for the rest of the series and continue on like he never existed.
