Fascinating: Ursula K. Le Guin famously wrote "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" as a rejection & indictment of utilitarian pragmatism, condemning those who would, in exchange for happiness & prosperity, accept the suffering of one small child... Then went on to justify her own voluntary abortion on the grounds that terminating the child's life made her career, success, romance & prosperity possible. Very Taoist.
