Not enjoying this. It is too derivative, too twee, and FAR too modern despite its attempts at presenting an alternate fin-de-siecle Europe. What is happening is ENTIRELY too obvious and the "horror" elements are too few and far between -- it spent more time on pronouns and 21st century gender politics (again in what is supposed to be fin-de-siecle Europe) than on the location or the actual threat.

Geez, that took a turn for the unexpected. I was thinking it'd be more like Dougal Dixon's "Man After Man" but nope! Humanity modifies itself, reaches the stars...then runs into an infinitely more technologically advanced species which quickly wipes us out, leaving only the scattered remnants they felt like using their hypertech to modify into simple animal forms (worms, lupines, etc.).

Le Guin famously wrote "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" as a rejection & indictment of utilitarian pragmatism, condemning those who would, in exchange for happiness & prosperity, accept the suffering of one small child... Then went on to justify her own voluntary abortion on the grounds that terminating the child's life made her career, success, romance & prosperity possible. Very Taoist.

Having read the first chapter of the next volume, i know Doflamingo is still up & fighting. This is one of the worst aspects of manga -- "But wait! He's STILL not beaten!" I'm 200 chapters from being up to date with this 1000+ chapter manga and it feels like half of them have been about this one stupid fight.

GAH. I HATE THESE ENDLESS BATTLES. I just want Doflamingo to die or escape to be a threat another day because this manga tendency to have battles keep going and going and going with combatants getting infinite revivals...it just leaves me feeling annoyed and tired of the story.
