Yay, more lectures. Nothing makes a story POP like grinding it to a screeching halt every couple chapters to lecture the audience. Word to the wise: the more you lecture "normies" about how everyone needs to just ignore biology and only see gender/sex as whatever someone imagines themself to be at any given moment...the more inclined folks are to reject your preaching & embrace biology.

Okay, so this is turning into a Matryoshka doll of narratives. The overarching one is about Gon, and that one is great...but then we diverted into the whole Kurapika storyline and that one is dull as dishwater...and then that one diverts into a storyline about the Spiders which is equally dull...but then that one diverts into a narrative about Gon & Killua going all Ready Player One...which seems neat, honestly.

I feel like this is fun, light fluff -- OSC's "Tales of Alvin Maker" is richer, darker, constituting real artistry, but I fully accept that Wrede has done something much more family friendly (except for the bit about abortifacient spells...).

I could not be any less interested in this arc or this part of the setting. This feels like a massive and pointless digression, stretching on interminably into the future. I'm considering dropping the series if this doesn't pick up.

Gotta say, this new Goodreads setup has one advantage. I now spend a LOT less time on this site.

Hmm. That was an abrupt ending. My wife & kids love this series, but to me it feels like a thinner, less rich version of Orson Scott Card's "Tales of Alvin Maker." Not bad, but not exactly a classic. I do like the idea of the Rationalists -- basically the Amish if they were anti-magic instead of anti-technology. But I'm told the three books in the trilogy are basically one longer narrative, so maybe that'll help?
