MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD etc. etc. I get it, TK. I get it. Believe me. I went to UC Berkeley. I went to NYU. I took Women's Studies courses. I get it. And all the anti-natalism in the world won't obscure the fact that "MEN BAD" seems to be the entire point of this book.

Maybe T. Kingfisher just isn't for me? Contextually i understand the relentless "EVERY MALE IS BAD! ALLLLLL MEN ARE BAD!!!! BAD MEN BAD MEN BAD MEN!!!!!" but I have no reason to believe that it IS actually just context (ie: seeing from the protagonist's point of view) given that there was that weird 4th-wall-breaking aside about the protagonist coming to a conclusion centuries before later gender-political theorists.

Holy cow, that is...one heck of an ending, Saunders. And since you died a couple years ago, I can't even write to ask what you thought about it, what motivated your decisions... Because this is an amazingly dark, downbeat finale to an epic fantasy series. Yes, the world is saved, but everything that made the hero capable of saving the world also makes him incapable of living in the world he has saved. So he doesn't.

That chapter ended on an excellent juxtaposition. The relief & triumph of the Kandisa's fleet, the fury of the Erriten, but also the horror of the Monomatapa's army as they witness what has been done to the returning scouts...

This is a miserable, self-righteous book about a miserable, self-righteous protagonist. The supernatural elements are sparse, few & far-between, because the author seems to feel the soap opera drama is more important than the reason one might actually look to read this.

Oh joy. The protagonist is a bitter, self-righteous bigot who's constantly whining about how everyone else around her is a bitter, self-righteous bigot. But SHE'S different, because SHE'S right! Ugh. Also, she's supremely ungrateful. She chose a bad husband, flees him with their kid, her dad takes her in even though he's an old retiree...and she expresses NO gratitude, complaining constantly.
