I really hate how none of the characters ever tell Clary anything, in an effort to "protect" her. How is keeping her best friend's torture and imprisonment from her protecting her? How is being horrifically emotionally abusive to her protecting her? How!? And why do I have the feeling that no one--especially Jace--will be held accountable for this behavior?

Why is it that every time Clare wants to show Clary doing something brave, it ends up looking stupid and selfish instead?

Wait, Luke has a sister? Did I just miss this in the nearly 1000 previous pages, or did it take this long for it to come out?

So we're fast closing in on 100 pages and all Clary has managed to do so far is make a really stupid decision, and have to be carried around because she's poisoned and delirious. Isn't she supposed to be saving the world from Valentine? That's what the blurb told me.

Wait, what? Jace does too know about Alec's sexuality. He's the one who blood blurts out about Alec dating Magnus in the second book. He doesn't know Alec is in love with him, but he damn well knows Alec is gay. Why do Simon and Alec think he doesn't?

Seriously? Shadowhunter children aren't taught any world history at all? I mean, while I appreciate the fact that Clare didn't go the "Hitler was actually a demon" route or anything, you'd think these kids would know of at least some of the oppression Jews faced.

Clare keeps insisting that Alicante is the most beautiful city ever, but when she describes it, it sounds so mundane.

I know she's trying to have the Shadowhunters have a certain type of last name, but it makes it sound like all Shadowhunters are white people.

This isn't a book, it's a giant bag of dicks. Why is everyone so shitty to each other?

And Clary has just done something unfathomably stupid. Exactly no one is surprised.

And there's the whole clam shell suitcase imagery. What I don't understand is why Clare thinks this is necessary. People know what an open suitcase on a bed looks like. There's no need for a simile here. Less is more, people, less is more.
