I've convinced my teaching partner to read this, and she seems to be enjoying it. My first IJ recommendation victory. The last time I recommended this to someone, I lent them my copy and they spilled some unspecified liquid on it, irreparably wrinkling the first 200 pages. The clean copy I'm currently reading was snagged for me from a garage by my Uncle Mike, who has some very DFWy mannerisms. Good guy.

Much has changed in my life since I last read this. At the risk of sounding cliche (but ah, they are cliches for a reason!), it feels like coming home.

Hippe - what a beautiful chapter. It brought to mind a wordless infatuation I had for a girl back when I was in school. Is this a universal thing?

I can’t put my finger on what it is I like so much about this. Atmosphere? World-building? There’s a strange dystopian feeling going on beneath the surface... I don’t know.

I’m curious about other translations...
