Part 3

Still nervous

Despite loving ABGG, Enard seemed to struggle when it came time to pull his myriad threads together. This also has a lot going on, and only half the space to accomplish whatever he’s after here. I’m a little nervous.

More 19th century medical farces please.

Chapter One had me thinking I was in for a lite-Borgesian tale of an amnesiac rediscovering himself and his crimes. It’s now clear this is a series of episodic absurdities. Anyway I had lite right.

I was expecting Emma Bovary to be misguided, childish, and yes she is those things. She is also unsettlingly relatable. I’m beginning to understand Flaubert’s famous phrase.

Part One ends with a gut punch.

Unfortunately relevant.

Books like this make me incredibly cynical about philosophy. I don't think I'm misinterpreting its messages, but the writing is so full of jargon and referential filler that it's a slog to get to the end of each page. If the project of this book is truly to offer hope in a hopeless time, it only seems to be offering that hope to other philosophers who can stomach the language. Abort!

Excellent prologue. Grabbed this because our household is entering a fresh era of stress and I suspected a traditional, straightforward novel would do me more good than the long complex monsters I’ve been skirmishing with lately. My gut has rewarded me.
