Ahh! This book is so great. Connecting things that as isolated history made much less sense. It’s a pretty sobering upshot if centering the economic importance of slavery and its expansion makes the early history of the U.S. suddenly make sense like a trompe-l’oeil seen from the proper spot.

Welp, I wasn’t expecting to learn why Germany has been such a powerhouse of fountain pen ink production from a book about cancer, but here we are!

Kind of mystified as to why the (British) narrator has now made a character twangily American who A. was established in the last book to be originally Scottish and B. who the same narrator rendered as perhaps slightly northern English all last book. I guess there must have been several years between books and he forgot? 🤔
