It's been a while, but as soon as someone mentioned being from Cossayuharie, my brain said "oh, right, we know this setting!" and summoned up the backstory from the previous books in the series. Good to see you again, Clare and Russ!

So far, this is The Secret History with an LGBTQA female protagonist and a hint of gothic creepiness. Not going to quit yet, but I already want to punch every single character.

Apparently two people being 100% honest with each other is my romance novel catnip. Who knew?

Have already said "Oh crap no" three separate times, so yes, this is just as good and terrifying and wrenching as Foundryside.

Ooooooh, your life is so hard, being able to move to France and learn how to bake real French bread and go to fancy chef school, while your wife takes care of the kids and is apparently perfectly okay with you leaving at 3am to go watch secret late-night baking rituals and spending hundreds of Euros on proper chef garb. I'm not sure he's even aware how much privilege he's got.

Author, I want to like this book, but I am running out of patience with the number of times you've already (30 pages in) left your wife home alone with twin toddlers so you could drink chablis and be a French fanboy while hoping Monsieur Chef Senpai noticed you.

Time for a long-time comfort read, I think. Smart witch-girls and the confused but 100% supportive boys who love them.

Taking a break at the start of book 4, because I have reached my saturation point of “oh, myself or my woman has been insulted, the only option is MURDER” and/or “Huh, that grey man on a grey horse I insulted is actually the Lord of Death...oops?”
