I thought we had left stupid sobriquets behind in the 00’s with the BDB. In PNR, those names were silly but in HR, they are patently ridiculous. Likelihood of DNF: very high.

Re-reading this book because I don’t feel like finishing the other 10 I have midway.

I know he’s a cop, always seeing danger everywhere but she’s staying in the Upper East Side! Warning her not to go out at night is a bit silly.

C'mon girl, you're a lawyer! Not even an earthquake should distract you in the courtroom, let alone your opposing counsel (even if you're hooking up with the guy.) This made me realize how much I miss the smart lawyers in Julie James's books...what happened to her?

This plot cannot be more ridiculous. Why doesn’t he tell her about the danger? And what exactly does his father want from him?

Is this guy really trying to antagonize his divorce lawyer?

After going through all this trouble to sleep with Stephen, Jo seems to have forgotten about him pretty easily when Smith came into the picture!

I just can’t with this woman.

Am I supposed to believe that she gets by with a fake mustache and stage makeup in the 1870s??? Stage makeup in those days was probably just okay from AFAR, it’s not supposed to pass a close inspection!! And what kind of glue is she using that the mustache is not falling off? Totally ridiculous.

Oh lord this woman is a man hater. When her father is letting her traipse in a bad neighborhood doing what she wants. 🙄

A fifth of the book is gone and these two still haven’t slept together. It’s working though.

I’ve read this author before and the book was really good so I’m very surprised at how amateurish the writing is here. Maybe this is one of her earlier efforts? Characters are behaving as if they don’t know the rules of society, even those who should.

This woman has no manners. Criticizing her hostess to her own son! 😱

I’ve been laughing my ass off at these two. A grumpy/grumpy pairing!! Why don’t we see more of this?

I don’t blame this woman for wanting her independence but doesn’t she realize that she’s better off marrying a man she can trust? Who’s to say this husband she’s envisioning wouldn’t betray her?

Why do authors do this?? Finish the effing love scene!!

He’s continuing her seduction by…GASP! Taking her to a museum!!

Such a rascal!! Showing up at her house to seduce her with…a book!!

I feel bad for the poor guy but the irony of his accident made me laugh!

How does her mother know about her “unnatural urges?” Where did she meet this friend? So many things not being explained!!

Really like how Phoebe is handling the business of the mistress - acknowledging that she understands intellectually but her heart feels differently! I don’t know that I would tolerate such a thing, even if it were happening in this day and age (back then it would have been soo mortifying!)

Glad that she realized she’d been a snob and apologized!!

Take her down a peg or ten, Paul! So many airs this woman has.
