Not sure what the author is saying when such a major trauma is a surprise and doesn’t exist before the reveal.

It’s cute to say as an aside but have you ever had fleas? It’s a nightmare. It’s a nightmare that will last for months.

Hah. This is writen almost the same as after Harry saves Hermione. “…Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.”

As soon as I read Beth and how sad she was, I knew she was going to join the main cast. It’s like a superhero team: Mab the tough, Osla the privileged, Beth the abused.

Sigh. Yes, it’s the “most secret place in Britain”. There’s always a superlative to get the reader going. The rarest jewel, the most special kid, the best destiny, the most important town, the most important businessman, the most famous actress, etc. etc.

This is not romantic. — “I had not been so fevered with desire since I was fifteen years old.”

If Fitz had even a minuscule of social intelligence he would do better.

Now that I think about it: why didn’t Fitz visit Hap, his son, when he came back? He found Patience, Nettle, Fool, but not even a mention of Hap. Completely forgotten.

And is no one going to ask why or how Prilkop has the super rare magic? Not even curious? Ugh, Adventure books.

I am noticing that with the large reduction in shocks, surprises, turns, interruptions, the large amount of repetition and descriptions is becoming more apparent. It’s beginning to feel bloated again.

What’s this nonsense now?

So. Fitz receives all his traumatic memories back and yet…he’s fine after a day or two. Wait, no, the book says he’s “better”. Typical Adventure book. Ugh

The amount of repetition in this book is unfortunate. We already know about the Witness Stones. You’ve told us the long story of them three times already.

Ugh. Not that old “you need pain to know happiness” nonsense.

Disappointed. I wish the author had been braver.

How did I get here? The clues were obvious and some were even explicitly told! And yet, I kept reading. It’s mystery. The descriptions were offen overbearing and unnecessary. We travel to three (?) different places for novelty and culture, but we stay on the ice-island for a little less than half of the book.

You know what I like about these books, (when Hobb gets it right for me)? It’s the mingling of personal grief and powerlessness with also the larger heroic power and recovery.

I’ve read this expression countless times, but this must be the first time I ask myself, “but what does it mean?” — “… and exhaustion has set into my bones…”

I’m not being fair. How can I judge the average based on the rare outliers?

Why do so many authors sound the same? It can’t be a fault in the medium, because Dickens exists.

Boo. Already hate the first line. I know everyone wants a great first line, and everybody tells you that you need a great first line, but… I already know the author is not taking this seriously. — Just be normal. I don’t need peacock feathers, alright?
