Didn’t JP Morgan say she’d get an assistant?

I’m going to guess some trauma has happened or will happen.

Ugh. We get the plot devices of rescuing the other to solidify the relationship.

It’s still not clear why. — “To my eyes, he appears just as extraordinary as the art.”

What’s the plot of this book? Wasn’t it about the danger of her lie? We have the rise of her career story and now two romances, all unrelated.

Open marriage... Author, what are you doing?

Mr. Berenson sounds like Prince Charming guiding Cinderella through the ballroom. — “Do you see how everyone is looking at you? You are as singular as the art you acquire.”

Even if I overlooked the age difference, what’s the appeal the author is selling here? Compliments and attention? Intellectual stimulation? Why are there no friendships in this story?

Why is the author applying the term “blue blood” incorrectly? Maybe it’s meant as a metaphor?

Also, apparently, all it takes is to tell a man you read his book to start the attraction?

Gross. Another old man sexual tension.

Roll eyes. — “Even across the Atlantic, we have heard tales of your acumen with manuscripts…”

This sexual tension between a thirty something and a seventy something is just unsettling.

Rolling my eyes. I didn’t realize this was a superhero story. She’s just born with persuasive powers. - “Maybe dealers on both sides of the pond have finally met their match.”

I’m more alarmed that she took her mother to England and left her little siblings behind. Who’s watching the five kids if her mother is a poor friendless single mother isolated in New York City?

Gross. “What am I doing? I cannot succumb to this man—this notorious philanderer, more than forty years older than me.”

I’m a little confused. This is JP Morgan or JP Morgan II?

So. There’s a lie she needs to be careful not to reveal. She has some mysterious past trauma about her father leaving for Russia or something — same as the last three Fiction books (published last year) that I’ve read.

Boo. Sexual tension with her benefactor, JP Morgan II.

It’s funny, I read another book about 1940s and how women were dismissed and ignored. In this book we are told that JP Morgan is swayed by her argument that a woman will have instant credibility and attention when she walks in a room. In 1906.

Also, there are a bunch of scenes where a character will go and confront someone and demand to know if they’re lying. The other person says no. And then the scene ends the same as it began.

You can skip a lot of this book. It repeats itself a lot. There’s way too much introspection.

Halfway mark. Sure, a killer is glimpsed.

Every chapter is a new location and a new character. We get the description of the place, we get the description of the person. We get a little dialogue and then we move on to a new chapter.

Honesty, I looked at the map and I don’t know why Beth is whining. The biggest distance is only a 3 hr drive. — “…what were the changes they’d ever meet up again?”

This happy ending is starting to touch the clouds.

Sure, suddenly Osla has impervious self-esteem. She uses an argument she could’ve used at any point in the book!
