Strange throw-away. Is this to tell us Egypt is different then the US? Is this to let us know that homosexuality is unlawful in Egypt? Is this going to be on the test later, or can I forget it?

She’s been out of the field for 15 years, and her daughter is 14 (or was that an old memory?). She must have started dating Brian and had Meret all in the same year.

I wonder if they’ll get marriage counseling. This is a classic relationship problem. As of today, I’ve been with my wife 14 years and we still get assumptions wrong sometimes. I mean, how often do humans guess correctly the outcome of something outside a controlled experiment? (Even then we have peer-review)

Trivial fights are always fun for subtext.

Narrator understands her daughter, but in the story she is painfully oblivious. Is this a hindsight gap? Is this a diary? Also the timeline is screwy. Brian bought the tickets before Meret got invited. There’s no way he could’ve known.

I have a toddler and it’s the same. Maybe it’s just childhood. - “Adolescence is like summer weather in Boston—storms chased by sunshine, in the span of a minute. Occasional hail. And every now and then, a cloudless sky.”

Would a 14 year-olds make this old-timey joke? — “If you need the right man for the job…get a woman.”

Eighty pages of flashbacks anecdotes and summaries. Is this enough set-up?

I liked this passage when it starts off with the narrator coming across as defensive. It’s a fun subtext. But then it becomes explicit.

Two reoccurring themes in these anecdotes so far: there’s richness in the world of the small, and look at how life could’ve been different.

We’re getting all these flash-back anecdotes.

I wonder how the narrator found out what her mother “spent most of her life wondering”.

I couldn’t remember what a cormorant was, but I guess a little girl knew if her mother used it in a story. Also, great memory by the narrator, or is she embellishing, i wonder. Or maybe the author just liked that detail and she wasn’t going to change it. — “She told me that a cormorant guided her,”

I just learned the word, ‘Baleen’, and I’ll never see it again.

This is played for a cutesy laugh, but really, in real life this would be painful and expensive. I’ve had a few injuries while out with my wife. Stitches ain’t too funny
