I sped through this stunning book, read it on lunch breaks, read it before and after work etc. I don’t even know how I’m saying this, but I think I liked this book better than Migrations, and I LOVED that book. I’m a little (a lot) emotionally devastated, tbh.
This book was so haunting and magical and real — I was fully sucked in from the start. I don’t even know what else to say. This was a brilliant, heart achingly beautiful book.

Inti and Aggie, twins, have an unusual childhood. The girls spend part of each year in the forest with their naturalist Canadian father, and part of the year in Australia with their tough policewoman mother. The only constant they have in their life is each other, and the bond they share only grows stronger as they reach adulthood. As the novel begins, Inti a wildlife biologist, leads a team of scientists attempting to introduce gray wolves to a Scottish national forest surrounded by sheep farms

Following up Migrations was already a daunting task, but McConaghy somehow not only released a second novel a year later, but actually surpassed the near-flawless story and style with her sophomore Once There Were Wolves.
Swinging from heartbreaking to thrilling as Inti tries to re-introduce wolves into the Scottish forest while struggling with the past her and her sister - Aggie - share, Once There Were Wolves is a story about conservationism and sisterhood, and how not too dis-similar humans a ...more

Goodness...Charlotte McConaghy has written yet another remarkable, unputdownable novel. ONCE THERE WERE WOLVES is the extraordinary story of a broken woman determined to protect a pack of fourteen wolves, creatures she has dedicated her life to protect. As she did in MIGRATIONS, McConaghy calls upon nature to expose the flaws in human nature, and our unifying need to love and hurt, heal and forgive. Her evocative prose and compelling narrative had me enthralled from beginning to end. Masterfully

I did not think MIGRATIONS could be topped, but Charlotte McConaghy has brought it again! ONCE THERE WERE WOLVES is atmospheric and thrilling - as wild as the wolves at its forefront. McConaghy has the uncanny ability to connect us to the natural and untamed world around us, as well as the untamed within ourselves. Inti’s visceral understanding of shared pain and feeling, the need to protect those we love, and the deep frustration that comes with failing to do so is universal and heartbreaking.

Charlotte McConaghy's new novel, releasing in August, 2021, takes place in a remote area of the Scottish Highlands, where conflict builds between the sheep-farming residents and the team of biologists who have reintroduced wolves in the Highlands, in hopes of saving the dying landscape. Stories like these tug hard at my heartstrings, as it's usually the case that man wins over nature and the wild animals, which is the case in this dual love story between biologist Inti Flynn and the wolves, and

Thank you Macmillan so much for providing me with an arc of this book. It was absolutely stunning. I read Migrations when it came out last year, and it was such a spectacular introduction for me to Charlotte McConaghy's literary talents, but I might have to say that I liked this one even more. Her writing style is so precise, so careful, so incredibly unique. It gives you chills, on every page, and is unrelentingly alluring. There are mysteries built on mysteries, and so many haunting images, be
