As you can probably imagine, the humans in this novel are the so-called "remarkably bright creatures," although Marcellus would question that statement. 🐙

Oof, this book, man.

Marcellus is the best, and I love seeing the world through his eyes in his chapters. 🐙

There's all these footnotes with incarceration facts and statistics, and you wonder, are they talking about the book or the real world? Then you realize that it doesn't matter because it really applies to both because our penal system is terrible, corrupt, overwhelmingly racist, and just a couple steps away from implementing gladiatorial combat between inmates.

My second octopus book this year! 🐙

This novel comes out of the gate swinging (pun slightly intended), and I can already tell it's gonna be a fantastic ride.

Yup, definitely the white man messing things up.

The white man arrived, which obviously means there's gonna be trouble.

I knew it was headed this way, and it's still making me have all the feels.

I went in for the time-travel romance story, and have been kicked in the feels over the frank, no-holds-barred descriptions of anxiety and depression the main character is going through and fighting in order to save herself. And now I can't put it down.

I'm gonna stop beating myself up for progressing so slowly on this book. I like it, and again, the narrating voice is perfection, but I am out of practice reading in Spanish and that's okay.

Unexpectedly good. Always a pleasant surprise.

I have been instructed (ordered) to finish this book ASAP and given how good the first three chapters were, it won't take me long.

I'm a little conflicted with this novel because it has little in terms of plot, but the prose is fantastic.

It's slow-moving, but so are days in the mountains of Appalachia. But also like the Appalachian mountains, something dark lurks and will strike the characters soon.
