The amount of research into languages needed to make this story work cannot be overstated.

This book is perfect for the audiobook format given how it is narrated by one of the characters. It makes me feel like the boy in The Princess Bride.

Kuang is just firing on all cylinders in this book. The commentary about colonialism and empire is poetic and lethal because it's shown in the effects on the characters' lives and thoughts. You can argue theory, but you have to face the reality of consequences.

Let's finish this.

The fact that this story is told through the eyes of an immigrant child and has LOTS to say about colonialism makes the book so much better.

Moving this to Paused until I get it back from the library.

Going over how the rich barons of industry--Morgan, Carnegie, Rockefeller, etc--basically reshaped this country to suit their financial interests. They outright bribed the government and promoted an educational structure that taught that to be rich was pious, to be poor a sin, and compliance must be absolute.

The preface and introduction alone were worth the price of admission!
