My to-read pile has become so overwhelming that I'm just letting a random number generator dictate what I read next.

I really hate to give up on a book that's been recommended to me multiple times, but I am becoming increasingly certain that I am not the target audience for this book.

But I can definitely see why I'd get this recommendation, what with the time travel and super powers.

The first chapter was pretty good, but since then this has mostly been people talking at her and carrying her from location to location. I am rapidly growing bored. There's a time traveling supervillain, and he is boring. How is that even possible?

I am quite angry at how all of the things I need to do today keep getting in the way of reading. Quite. Angry.

My, but this is a fun book.

I kind of want to slap every single character in this novel. Well, none of the servants, but all of the rest of the cast.

Thinking how refreshing it was to have a heroine comfortable with how exceptional she was and responds to other people's disbelief with, "I'm just that good."

And I turned the page to find her declare, "I'm not special!"

I was enjoying this right up until that page which continues with and illogical mess based on her assumption about her lack of value.

"One said, "Since it was wartime, the programmers were women." Then he added, "Of course, they didn't know what they were doing." I couldn't believe I was hearing this in 1996. I asked my daughter if I could go over and punch him out."

Dear GR, that thing where in addition to a site announcement at the top of my timeline, you also add a notification for that reading challenge I've never participated in? No. Go ahead, send an email. Maybe that will work.

"Peter told me once that he would never take me to Biloxi because I was so outspoken in my views on discrimination that I'd be killed." A recollection from a dinner date in 1945.

I give up. Every single thing in this book takes twice as long as it needs to, and I am not interested in half of the things.

In the middle of 6 different books. So, obviously, spending the evening reading chapter 4 of someone's nanowrimo. OBVIOUSLY.

I have given up on this one. I wish it was good enough to enjoy or bad enough to be entertaining, but it's just boring.

I was fortunate enough to be reading on a sunny blanket with a purring cat curled up next to me when I got to Sofia Samatar's story. Devastating.

Society is falling apart. Violence is rapidly rising in spite of all efforts to control the population. Our heroine, therefore, is losing sleep over whether or not her boyfriend introduced her as his girlfriend.

This book would be so much better if it was from Lin's perspective instead of Lissa's.

I wasn't sure which of the 4 anthologies I'm in the middle of to pick up this afternoon. Solution: start a fifth anthology.

Holy shit, a 4th named female character!

Whose entire role is to walk into a room, turn around, and . . . walk back out.

I don't even know what to try to read after Mirror Empire. Maybe the Goblin Emperor book I keep hearing about? Maybe something not fantasy at all? I won't have the new Peter Watts book for a couple of weeks. Maybe finish one of the 5 things I'm already in the middle of? I don't know.

Also, this book has an excellent amount of violence. Seriously, what is Lilia's CON modifier?

Guys, this book is bananas. I'm three chapters in and feel like I should be taking notes. The prose isn't anything special, but there are like 20 ideas introduced on every page. There's no ground to go to. Even the walls of buildings aren't just walls. I am not complaining.

I finally won something from goodreads. Go me!

Okay, I admit it - I have misplaced this book. I'm pretty sure it's in the house somewhere....

Marsters narration is still the best thing about these. The scene were some characters are talking while fake smiling - brilliantly acted.

"He would never have needed to capture it this way if she had not betrayed him with that misstep."

So it isn't enough that this is yet another story where the role of a powerful, knowledgeable woman is to assist the clueless man who's really the hero and then fall for him - he also has to refer to a woman daring to try to do his job as a betrayal?

That sound is laughter. Sobbing, bitter laughter.

So far, I like this very much.
