Last time I read this series was in 2014. I’ve forgotten how detailed the art was. The anime completely got rid of a lot of the subtle expressions from the characters, specifically Sasuke’s—which is a shame since emotions are a big part of the story.

I like that the author's descriptive & doesn't shy away from adding more to the imagery. I still can't get used to the pompous dialogue—it makes me forget that this story takes place in MX. Idk if that has to do w/ 1950s & modern social class disparities or if it's the author's language choice. It becomes distracting sometimes, takes me out of the moment, & makes the story try too hard to be like classic gothic lit.

The lines, “I am Catalina Catalina Taboada. CATALINA. Cata, Cata come out to play” remind me of Gertrude Stein and her Cubist/Modernist poetry.

In all, I think I’m going to like this book. The dialogue is a bit monotone and often overly sophisticated and unnatural, but the details make up for it.
