Kent doesn’t trust her reader to “get it” so she keeps pumping out exposition via the FMC’s internal dialogue

Here’s the thing: much of this fundamentally doesn’t actually make any sense. It’s not supposed to. So why try?

Can someone tell me what the heck Kent means when she uses “I swear to fuck” instead of “I swear to (deity)”

I’m sort of on board with this. The gut-punch of the reveals at the birthday party and the airport had me gasping out loud. Other than that, I’d say I’m rather unenthused.

Bash is a grump and has been dealt a shit hand in life. Gwen has daddy issues and loves yoga. That’s all I’ve got lol

I started this a few days ago and I’m without a doubt going through the motions. I looooved the first book in this series. The second less so. Still, I was keen to get my hands on the grand finale.

Maybe too much time has passed. Maybe the way I connected with the worldbuilding isn’t enough to carry me through, especially when the three main characters are scattered to the wind

Still having a great time while actively trying not to overthink all the things that don’t make a lick of sense lol. Get real no one noticed the bandages on her stomach. Why won’t she tell him? How had she never once asked the other guys who or what Ghoul is?? Why does Xander hate her so much? And while we’re at it, why did they want her dead? It’s starting to test my limits of suspension of disbelief 🙃

I’m not sure I’d have been keen on this book if I knew in advance that while yes, it is SFF, it reads more like a romcom in vibes. Weird. Not bad weird. But weird.

This was also billed as the next fantasy romance everyone will be obsessed with. Ermmmm I don’t see that happening ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m nine chapters in and I swear we’ve had more than a dozen mentions of the FMC feeling like a caught rabbit. WE GET IT.

Worldbuilding is cool though

OF COURSE the only two female characters who are kind to our FMC are queer and into one another, so they’re not a threat

The internalized misogyny is LOUD

First smutty scene and I’m literally making the ew face as I listening

Good lord, I can’t wait for this to be over

Also, why is this girl always under eating? Causally. As if it’s not a problem.

The authors have a strange tick when it comes to describing settings. You won’t get much in the way of painting a picture, then all at once, an info dump of what everything around the FMC looks like. It’s boring, sloppy, and multiple times now I’ve realised I’ve stopped paying attention because of it

Am I reading something different from everyone else? The writing is amateurish to a pretty severe extent

Female narrator slaps. Male narrator (who stepped in for Blue Nose douche in Brynne Weaver’s series) is still learning… he can’t do an American accent to save his life. General voice acting is fine, at best.

I’m liking the narrative and characters. Certainly not bowled over by it

When I first came across this book back in February, I sent an email to the publisher asking for an arc. I called it a “me book” because it seemed to contain many of my favourite aspects of fantasy and romance, along with strong prose.

The published never replied 🤣

Anyway, I’m listening to it now and super bought-in. I adore being dropping right into high stakes!

I’ve been told to keep going until chapter 14. I’m not disliking this series, per se. I do keep expecting more to happen. There are long lulls of nothing plot-wise and repetition exposition

Soooo this is pretty terrible. Juvenile with repetitive language (e.g. “like the negative of a photograph”) and an awkward bully romance. Except for the nice one, I can’t tell the other guys apart.

Worst of all, there’s so much misogyny with the MMCs 😩 It’s gross. I have no doubt they’ll turn into simps for her. STILL. Will they suddenly stop thinking the words “juicy tits”? I doubt it.
