Loretta is starting Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living
This is a really gorgeous book. I'm listening to the audio, and it is wonderful to hear the interviews, but I will have to buy a paper copy so I can go re-read more slowly, with pencil and highlighter, and really contemplate some of the deep wisdom here. It is a good thing to be reading right now as the world seems to be going to hell. It gives me hope and ways of seeing other possibilities.

And the to-read list keeps getting longer and longer. Damn there's a lot of books I haven't read. BUT I thoroughly enjoyed Walton's chapters on the Vorkosigan saga books. And that tells me I am quite likely to like the other books that she likes. And so the list keeps growing.

I....think I might be done with Dresden, after this one. It's irritating me more than anything else. I'll finish it, because I can always listen to James Marsters, but...ehhhh. so far.

I'm on Chapter 47 or something and dang if Galbraith/Rowling isn't doing the same frigging thing she started doing in Book 5 of Harry Potter. Someone edit this damn book. It's good but it's taking a hell of a long time to wrap up.

Now I'm on the chapter about her first, and TERRIBLE, boyfriend, and it's actually a wonderful piece of memoir writing. Real insight, bitter humour, real people, heart-achingly true. And also, really effing funny.

Loretta is starting How To Be A Woman
ehhhhh. It started great - I thoroughly enjoyed the first few chapters. But now she's onto fat and it's half-right and more wrong and completely muddled and twisted. All fat people are emotional overeaters. And ridiculously, she seems to think society is silent about treating these emotional overeaters. Is the UK really that different from North America on this issue?

The first part of the book was riveting. I loved it. The middle part was kind of a slog. And then it got rather awfully horrifically violent. It's still good, I'm still reading, but so far this is not my favourite Joseph Boyden. Maybe the ending will bring it all together. But I don't think this one is going to be the unqualified rave that Three Day Road was.

The first story, Royal Beatings, is one I will come back to for lessons on structure and drift. The opening pages were a brilliantly done portrait of characters and setting.

I wonder if I would be as irritated by this book if I were reading it in paper, rather than listening on audio. The plot pretty much involves a lot of trying to things out from unavailable or sick people people who are not around and not coherent as a straight up plot device. Seriously?

I'm on chapter 3 of the book. The author is clearly, deliberately, slowly unfolding a mystery in these opening chapters. Which mystery is SPOILED in the first two lines of the goodreads blurb I just read in search for the book to update. DAMN IT.

The first book in the series which I am actually reading-reading, as opposed to listening-reading. Although I fully expect to re-read my favourites the old-fashioned way sometime soon.

I am re-reading this book, which I absolutely loved, as an example of craft, of style, of a novel written about two real women in a particular historical context, for inspiration.

Oops. I've just realized, 9 chapters in, that I started with the last book in the series. I got from somewhere that this would be a good place to start. Oh well. It's still good and I don't feel lost...but also not sure I'll go back and read the others. We'll see.
