I'll be reading this one for a long time, with a study group at my meditation centre. Loving it and our discussions so far.

Yeah, Grafton seems to realllllly not like fat people. She might be the first author I abandon due to generalized fatphobia. Maybe it gets better in latter books but I'm not interested in continuing this trend. I'll finish this book but eh.

The story is fine, if somewhat slow-moving, but I am finding myself irritated by the casually sexist descriptions of women, the fatphobia/stereotypes, and the downright bizarre "flirtation" happening with the cop. Like - their first real conversation is not remotely realistic to me. And I can't put it down to just "dated" because 1990. the world hasn't changed that much. Still reading though.

In preparation for reading Book 2, now released, I''m doing a re-listen to this but with Amber Benson narrating.

There is some good good stuff here. Liking it a lot.

This is really, really good. Very practical and workable.

Halfway through and loving this. Very real, both dark and funny, flawed characters and honest writing.

I am really, really loving this. It is both a fascinating look at South Africa and the hateful system of apartheid, and an intriguing, sometimes awful, sometimes funny memoir told by an amazing storyteller. Highly highly recommend the audiobook - Noah is a fantastic narrator.

The opening chapter in this book is one the most captivating, rivetting, overall best openings of a novel I've ever read. Stunning. I am hooked.

I first picked this up a loooong time ago, while in the middle of a depression. And then put it down. I started it again now, ironically when I am feeling much better - and it turns out that's a good time to read this. It's about tools for trying to head off the ruminating and self-flagellation that can lead one ever deeper into the depression cycle. I think it'll be helpful.

The DNA science in here is pretty much complete horseshit, right???? Eh. Can't say I wasn't warned. But I must finish it. (it really is so much easier to say that with audiobooks than paper books, I must confess).

This is...not going to be one of my favourite Stephen King books. Hoo boy. But it's King, and so I have to finish it. Was it first published as a serial of some sort, I wonder? Cause dang it's repetitive with the explanations of who is who.

As a former trial prosecutor (albeit in Canada and never elected), I am having ISSUES with the central character and her approach to prosecutions. But I don't know enough about the US system to know if she is a typical DA or has seriously questionable ethics. And it is entirely possible she is going to Learn a Hard Lesson over the course of the novel. As with all Lippman books, though, I still pulled in to the story.

This book is breaking my heart more than anything I've read in a long time. And also it's brilliant.

Slooow reading. Not that I don't like it...I do...but I have to have a certain amount of time and a certain level of alertness to get into it. Which sometimes means it's a week between reading sessions. Which is a problem with a 700 page borrowed from the library. I am liking it enough to keep reading despite the accumulating fine though. This weekend should finish it off.
