FMC references a lot of movies. Already quotes from The Princess Bride, The Lion King, and an animal companion she compares to Wilson from Castaway. Hopefully it stays fun and isn't overused!

I really love the narrator but don't find the book to be super engaging. So it's easy to keep listening, and I can be convinced it's better than it is, but I'm gonna take a break and try again tomorrow in a (hopefully) more receptive mood.

Who are you, Nikki Garcia?! Cause I am immediately in love with your accent and narration.

I kinda forgot I started reading this today. It's not bad, but there's been nothing that grips me. And for a standalone that's nearly 20% of the way in, I definitely don't understand enough about the world and characters and plot.
...but I know more than I wanted to about their sexual preferences, so that's something, I guess?

Man, I'm just so bored by this and I feel awful. I really was excited for this book, it sounded so good

Devastating but I am not enjoying this at all.

I had different expectations from what's been happening so far. She's clearly been traumatized by a childhood event, and has unreliable memories that have shaped her life and kept her psychologically stunted from growing out of that childish mindset.
It's got a bit of a Hallmark movie vibe to it and idk, I really thought there'd be a murder based on the title, or a cozy mystery.

The MC has a tad of Not-Like-Other-Girls For Men™ vibe going on.
Reminds me of how there's an issue with male actors who feel compelled to "go method" because it feels more manly and rugged... but doesn't actually result in a better performance, and often annoys their co-workers.

So far this hasn't gripped me. The plot has only just barely started its introduction, the characters aren't immediately endearing or charming or intriguing. Something about the writing style feels like I'm being held at arm's length, even though this seems like it's supposed to be an intimate, character-driven story.

generally enjoying this so far, but did not appreciate the manipulative tactics around 69% in. I can see what he's doing, but I feel emotionally manipulated by it and can see how it would be incredibly triggering for someone.

"Awww. You thought I wasn't a brat? That's the most romantic thing anyone's ever said to me."
Soooooo this is a very young YA. I don't really understand the character and why she's so sarcastic given what's happened, but am trying to recalibrate my expectations to this writing style.

Not sure how I'm feeling about this so far. I've really enjoyed her books with themes that center more on patriarchy and fairytales and war, but I'm not sure how I feel about the Lovecraftian vibes. I think this is a duology or trilogy, though, so still a fair amount left.
