The murderer is the admin head of the Royal Society and he had developed a stable form of mercury fulminate while pretending to only be interested in butterflies. He died when he fell fleeing Wrexford and his compound exploded from the impact and torched the entire warehouse.

Charlotte's strengths are the ability to step back and look at situations with a keenly cynical appraisal, understanding her ability to sway public opinion, and her network of informants. There are numerous hints that she is from a good background and maybe even entitled to the "Melady" title the boys call her. Wrexford pays Charlotte to get information that can help solve the murder.

Wrexford is having jealously regarding Charlotte and she's having twinges regarding him. He's paying for the lads' tutor for them helping him out in book 1. There are too many suspects in this audio book so it is hard for me to keep up with all of them.

Charlotte moved to a new place, so they have to abide by proper rules with proper names for the boys. The cousin, assistant to the dead inventor broke into Charlotte's new house to get the drawings back from the Rooster that the inventor's wife had given her. They have the assistant tied up waiting for Rexford and her friend Jeremy who is also an investor. Assistant says wife killed inventor.
