Gawd if I wasn't part of a book club I'd never read this awesome book! ;) Two great points I just read... "The comparison mandate becomes this crushing paradox of 'fit in and stand out!' ... it's be just like everyone else, but better" Geez >: (

And from Stuart Brown: "... the opposite of play is depression." Oyeh. I don't wanna hear that. I'm rarely managing to add play or even creativity to my life :(

Oh my this book is a bit of a slog. A big appendix section means he's not explaining words when he first uses them so it's so confusing. And the magic system is confusing coz they use light to create weapons and tools that they then have to use mundanely, so magic fights are impossible to follow. He's a great story teller so I'm still captivated by that but... sigh.. not excited to read this most days. :/

Ack. I'm dragging my feet on reading this book. I'm not loving it so far. :( But I loved Brent Weeks' other series. I'm still loving his writing here, but I think I'm finding the magic system really complicated and I don't especially like it. And he's got a massive appendix so maybe I'm confused a lot coz he's not explainings things as much assuming you can read the appendix?

I'm loving how addictive this is! Space adventure and romance yay!! Although the simplistic conflict used in most romances just made me put the book down with a little grumble disgust. :/ But I guess it means I won't stay up even later! Haha!

Very awesome and fun! Not a complex or deep story but really enjoyable and I LOVE that era of sailing and pirates! And nice to have a magic, fantasy twist to it. If you wanna read a similar novel, check out The She-Wolf by Scarlet Ingstad. It's about the female pirate Anne Bonny and it was such an awesome read! :) Link below:

Argh the sucky stories are outweighing the decent ones. Losing desire to finish this. :( I realize the difference between the stories I liked and didn't was that the good ones had relationships and connection between the characters vs. just telling us what happened. :/

UGH. I don't know if I can even finish this book!!! Just more and more shit keeps happening!! And the protagonists are so powerless!! Mainly coz of circumstance but. It reminds of reading about historical figures... depressing unfairness sometimes. I want slightly realistic entertainment not the depressing parts of history. And I don't think a single positive thing has happened!!

Omg this book is depressing! No wonder I'm not eager to pick it up to read! It begins after almost all of our protagonist's family, has been killed and he's barely escaped alive. Then most recently ... SPOILERS AHEAD ... the one friendly Thane (duke) has just been murdered, and the massive army of the High Thane has just been slaughtered by the enemy because of their commander's ineptitude and ego!
