I finished reading right before leaving to see Roxane Gay speak at Kepler's Books tonight. Wonderful event!

A little dry in places, but overall and interesting and informative survey.

Story threads converging in a surprising and wonderful way! And excellent bits of writing like "inscrutable aliens--whom you've been given specific orders not to scrute"!

This is a fascinating mix of concise chronological memoir and frank, thoughtful musings on body and food.

This is, of course, intense and beautiful and powerfully honest.

So much going on in this book -- fascinating characters, outstanding worldbuilding, and beautiful writing: ""The curve those fingers made, those talons formed, were parentheses marking out something I've always felt totally within me, solid as home itself."

I'm finding some sections more interesting or persuasive than others, but overall I'm appreciating everything I'm learning from this book.

This is such a complex, well-developed universe, with fascinating characters to follow.

I'm just getting started, but this is cool.

Really interesting learning about how human societies developed and changed, and having connections drawn between different factors.

Already a lot of fascinating facts about the development of modern humans from our prehistoric ancestors.

Well, I sure wonder how all of this is going to turn out!

I love these characters!

"'How can you not know if you're writing a novel or not?' Stefanie asked. Ranjana saw a desperation behind her eyes, as if Stefanie herself were just coming to the realization that not every wayward thought that came into her mind had to be committed to the depths of her phantasmagoric​ opus."

I like the unusualness of the secrets and motivations driving these characters.

So curious to find out where all these characters will end up.

Could easily neglect doing anything else until I finish this!

"The marine layer in L.A. is pantyhose compared to the heavy white shawl that hangs over the Berkeley Hills. And don't even get me started on the fog across the water in San Francisco; that shit is so dense you could open your mouth and take a bite out of it. And chew. It's the gnocchi of weather."

Intriguing start. I can't wait to find out more about these characters!

I keep having to read just one more chapter because I'm so caught up in the emotions and connections of these characters

Lovely the way this is becoming a story​ of people longing for types of love they can't understand or express.

Okay, we've got an alien!

This is very interesting so far. Space travel, recent Czech history, and an entertaining main character.

Okay, interesting turn/connection in the final part.

I wonder how this is all going to resolve, and how it will tie back to the frame story established at the beginning.
