This may be a fiction book witch a fictional magic system, but it’s heavily based on historical British colonial ventures. There is ZERO sugarcoating. As a POC this read will be devastating and also very validating. I finished it half an hour ago and I’m still crying over it.
Set in an Oxford where there are translators from other countries in a school called Babel who have been groomed by the English to serve them and their selfish desires for expanding their colonies, we have our cohort.

Robin, half Chinese who is taken from his home of dying family with a professor who teaches him languages. Set in a world where silver is what makes the world go round and translators who can write and invoke magic into them to make technical advances. We follow Robin in this journey as someone who believes what he’s doing has no consequence to him, and that what the colonies do with his skill has nothing to do with him. But he will soon learn after being scouted by the Hermes society, a group of rebels who want to stop the misuse of silver by the British.

Then we have Ramy, our Muslim Indian sunshine. He has been faking it till he makes it between white Christian’s, but he is so kind and fun and intelligent. He’s my favourite.

Victoire, a Haitian girl who moved to France in the midst of their revolution, there is a lot more to her than meets the eye, she is very smart and clear headed, a born survivor.

And finally Letty, a white English girl who was shunned by her father for wanting to persue an education. Which side will she be on, her friends? Or the colonies?

This story is about consequences, beliefs and morals, Conflicting goals and priorities. A very interesting and researched look into colonial impact that will take you on an adventure and leave you rooting for our cohort.
