Lyn Fairchild Hawks is a North Carolina author who writes about gifted, weird, and wise activist youth. Her works span historical young adult fiction to middle grade novellas to short fiction. She's a recipient of the Norma Fox Mazer Award, an Elizabeth George Foundation grant, and was a James Jones First Novel Fellowship contest semifinalist. She's an MFA graduate of the Vermont College of Fine Art's program in Writing for Children and Young Adults. Her critical thesis, "Is YA Literary? The Search for an Abundant Canon," argues for high schools to open their canons to more young adult works.

In her other life, she's an education geek who loves teaching and Shakespeare.

Brand Obsessions: Definitely an ’80s Thing

Can you guess the ’80s brands? First, Some Background My novel Here Comes the Dog Parade is set in 1982. If you were around and conscious of that moment in time, let me know what you remember. “If you are going to be underestimated by people who speak more rapidly, the temptation is to speak slowly and strategically and outwit them.”
Doris Betts

“Often our students see nothing about religious faith except the lowest common denominator. They see nothing but TV evangelists and fools, and it doesn't occur to them that intelligent people might find this religious business worth living their lives by.”

“[when]asked, “What should I do if I want to become a writer?”
“Well,” Doris said, with that steely twinkle in her dark eyes, “My best advice for
you, honey, is to stop if you possibly can! And if you just can’t, then get ready to work
like hell. Hang onto your day job. And remember, you may not make a living, but you’ll
make a wonderful life.”
Doris Betts

“Nothing in life gets dropped without someone else having to pick it up.”
Amy Waldman, The Submission

Mark Twain
“Substitute 'damn' every time you're inclined to write 'very;' your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.”
Mark Twain
