I have one that I am sending to beta readers right now that is not as clear a fit as some of my others have been, and I'm struggling to find the right browse categories and BISAC classifications in order to list it at the various stores. You want a fairly narrow category to help boost visibility, and I am having a hard time narrowing it down further than 'contemporary fiction', which is sort of a mess to be in.

It is not easy to promote a book if you can't say 'it's a young adult suspense about...' or 'a mystery/thriller...' or whatever. People want to know what it is in order to judge whether it is something that they would ever consider reading.

Since I started publishing, I have learned that writing a synopsis, coming up with cover concepts, and focusing on genre and category is easiest to do before you start the first draft, and helps to focus your writing during the drafting process and keeps your writing tight. (less)

The Power of the Chosen Heir Trope in Cozy Mysteries

TL;DR: The chosen heir trope turns quiet inheritances into conflict — in Auntie Clem’s Bakery it can mean salvation for Erin or servitude for Willie, and it’s a powerful engine for cozy suspense.

What is the Chosen Heir Trope?

The chosen heir trope is popular in inheritance in fiction because it speaks to destiny and a sudde

“To shock those who didn't know and acknowledge those who have been shocked.”
P. D. Workman

“Without the ginger kitten, she would have been left with her own thoughts all night, worrying about what was going to happen at her police interview the next day. As it was, she seemed to fly from one kitten exploit to another. Was it any wonder that ‘catastrophe’ started with ‘cat’?”
P.D. Workman, Gluten-Free Murder

“She knew that she should; it was the only way to integrate the nightmares with her logical daytime thoughts. The therapists she had seen in the past talked about exposing her fears to the light of day, desensitizing herself so that she could handle the feelings and work through them.”
P.D. Workman, Santa Shortbread

“I crossed the street to walk in the sunshine.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”
J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
Mother Teresa

“You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt,
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth.”
William W. Purkey

“So many books, so little time.”
Frank Zappa
