But unfortunately I don't have a great answer for you. I majored in history and Spanish, and my first job out of school was teaching preschool. I only did grant writing later, as a part-time gig for a small nonprofit who paid me as a contractor. I never want to suggest doing work for free, but if you can find a way to get some experience under your belt as a freelancer while making ends meet doing something else, that's probably your (unfair) best bet.

That said: With the degrees I mentioned, I now write YA and my spouse (history degree) builds treehouses for a living. So don't be afraid to branch into areas that seem like unrelated longshots. Writing skills are valuable in every industry -- and they're not your only skills.

Good luck! <3(less)

“I guess it's not the place I want to escape. It's my place in this place.”
Kate Hart, After the Fall

“I feel . . . low," I say, looking away. "Like, literally low. Flat. It's not . . . sad, exactly. I mean, sad too, obviously. But that's a different feeling, I guess."

She nods. "There's a reason it's called 'depression' and not 'chronic sadness' or 'manic sorrow.'" She picks up a foam stress ball and squeezes it, leaving imprints of her fingers. "Depressions like these are holes left behind by a physical force. With mental depression, the force can be chemical or situational or both, but it doesn't just make a hole--it presses you into one that feels impossible to escape.”
Kate Hart, After the Fall

“Sometimes you can't put the pieces back together, even if you get them picked up”
Kate Hart, After the Fall

“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.”
Mark Twain

“The events of one’s life take place, take place. How often have I used this expression, and how often have I stopped to think about what it means? Events do indeed take place, they have meaning in relation to things around them.”
N. Scott Momaday, The Names

“In high school, the hardest years, she salted her bath water.”
Dessa, Spiral Bound

“Kizzy wanted it all so bad her soul leaned half out of her body hungering after it, and that was what drove the goblins wild, her soul hanging out there like an untucked shirt.”
Laini Taylor, Lips Touch: Three Times

“I try to make everyone's day a little more surreal.”
Bill Watterson, The Essential Calvin and Hobbes: A Calvin and Hobbes Treasury
