These three things were my initial impetus:
I always wanted to write a story about a relationship that involved more than two people, because I'm interested in such things and felt there wasn't enough written on the subject.
When I lived in San Francisco I noticed a lot of random attractive young men dressed in black, and always wondered who they were.
I was out one night playing pool with a boyfriend, and a guy approached us at the pool table, giving us tips on the game, we had to rush off to pick up a trailer from U-Haul because we were moving away from San Francisco the next morning, and we never saw him again. But I used that for a "what if..." take off point. (less)

I once described a white table top, another time, the sound of a flag in a light breeze. I consider it an exercise in writing and wait until it eventually leads to something that takes me on a great writing ride.(less)

“The word bisexual had stood out so bright and clear in my head that all else had ceased to exist. Bisexual. I had a word. I understood; it was me… a nice clear label that said it all. I didn't have to choose. I didn’t have to be not attracted to either guys or girls — a prospect I had found utterly absurd and likely impossible, but had thought was perhaps necessary. Now it wasn’t necessary. Now it was okay to be me. I was not unheard of. Bisexual.”

“Gay brothers and sisters,... You must come out. Come out... to your parents... I know that it is hard and will hurt them but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out to your relatives... come out to your friends... if indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors... to your fellow workers... to the people who work where you eat and shop... come out only to the people you know, and who know you. Not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths, destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake. For the sake of the youngsters who are becoming scared by the votes from Dade to Eugene.”
Harvey Milk

“The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.”
John F. Kennedy

“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”
Alan Greenspan

“You are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring itself.”
Alan Watts
