I grew up in a little country town called Walla Walla. A tiny place - about 600 people and a Lutheran church that, ironically, could seat all of them. Walla Walla had one big thing going for it - a lack of FUN trouble to get into. So when I was a kid, I spent most of my leisure time reading. And writing. And imagining weird stuff. I come by that talent naturally, you know - my mother has a nutty imagination and a nuttier sense of humour.

I grew up, moved to the Big Smoke, made a few dumb mistakes, grew up some more, and eventually realised that I'd always wanted to be a writer. So I started writing again. I wrote, and wrote, and eventually DEAD(ish) turned up in my head, almost fully-fledged, and I decided that Linda, Mike and Trent might ju

I tend to get 'writer's block' when I notice a problem in my story and don't have an immediate solution for it.

I have two methods for dealing with it:

- Describe the exact problem exactly where I noticed it in the text, surrounded by square brackets [ ]. The square brackets are to help me find it later; often once I have the problem down in words and know that I'll deal with it before the book's published, my mind is cleared of that worry and I can go on with whatever scene I was writing. I have to thank Piers Anthony for this solution; he mentioned it once in an Author's Note at the end of a book, and it's been a great boon.

- Put it in background processing. Sometimes I can't think of a good solution to a plot hole or boring section of story. Typically, I'll just go on with a different task, and think about the problem on and off over the next week or two. Generally I'll have an 'A ha!' moment, and the problem is solved in a weird and funny way without much conscious thought.(less)

New book! Podcast! Excitement!

A city skyline at sunset. A speech bubble emerging from a tall building says,

I’m thrilled to announce my next venture – a collaboration with Stephen O’Connor. It’s called The Other Shoe, and it tells the story of some very unusual people and their fight for what they think is right.

I’m serialising the book in both written and audio podcast form over on Patreon. If you’re a supporter, you can access the podcast automatically through whatever podcast software you use; if you

“New Rule #1 – Don't date women who paint. Arty-farty doesn't just equal freaky in the sack, it also equals nasty genius revenge. I don't like genius when it's happening to me.”
Naomi Kramer, Dead[ish]

“Women!” he muttered. “Can't live with 'em, can't escape even by killing 'em.”

“right? You aren’t allowed to testify against me and shit? Not quite? Oh, fuck”
