Yes, yes, yes, oh definitely yes . . . two, three, or a dozen times. Isaac Asimov was the first scifi author that I discovered in my very early teens. Robert A. Heinlein was my second.
HYR Farmer in the Sky* by Robert A. Heinlein
*This was my first Robert A. Heinlein book.

I don't know. Maybe. I read a bunch of Heinlein like Stranger in a Strange Land when I was about 19, and I liked it. Then I took a women's studies science fiction class and decided Heinlein was the enemy, when I was about 21. I haven't tried him again, since. I don't know if I've ever read any juveniles by him.HYR Artemis by Andy Weir
?
HNR, however it seems like something that I would read. Thanks for the recommendation.

(I haven't gotten around to Artemis myself yet, so I'm not recommending, just wondering.)HNR Charming, but it seems like one I might like, if I were in the right mood.
HYR An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
? I know you don't tend to do realistic fiction, but this is gorgeously written. (This one I've read.)
HNR
I know you like Jim Butcher. HYR The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, Book 1)
? Do you recommend it?

This one I've read! Here's an indication of how much I liked The Aeronaut's Windlass: I finished it a few days before Halloween in 2015 and made a steampunk pirate captain's costume for myself. I loved it! Yes, I recommend it!HYR Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes
?
HNR, and I probably would not read. I absolutely hate when writers put real people in fictional settings with a few exceptions. Alternative history usually has to use real people; an example would be Naomi Novik's inclusion of Napoleon in her superb Temeraire series. Otherwise, I think this literary device is kind of tacky. So, I will not be reading Ghost Boys.
HYR The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer*
?
*Totally different direction for Stephenie Meyer of Twilight fame. This one is actually getting good reviews.

I didn't watch "60 Minutes" on Sunday, but I watched an explanation with the news director and producers on OPrah's report about a new memorial for people who were lynched, on showing photographs of people who were lynched on 60 Minutes. People seemed really upset by these photographs. Too few people know who Emmett Till was, but I understand your not wanting to read that.I'm going to give Stephanie Meyer next book a pass, I think. Do you think you'll read it?
HYR The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo
?
Probably won't read The Chemist.
HNR The Poet X, but based on the reviews here on Goodreads, I recommended it to our school librarian. I generally don't read realistic fiction, but it looks like something we should have in our collection.
HYR A Good Man Gone* (Mercy Watts, Book 1) by A.W. Hartoin
*I like the author, but this is a departure from her urban fantasy. I just started this book.

HNR. Based on others' reviews here, I think not. Did you love it? I tend to not seek out mysteries. HYR An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
? I've just started it this morning, but I like the setting.
Never finished A Good Man Gone. May do so this summer. I am currently reading books that we are considering adding to our high school curriculum.

HYR Sold by Patricia McCormick
?I taught it 10+ years ago, my students were pleasantly surprised by it, and unfortunately it's not dated. It also checks boxes because it's a novel written in verse, it's short, and it's set in Nepal and India. Maybe it's one to have in the library and suggest it to students who like Girl, Stolen.
HNR
. It looks interesting.
HNR Sold. I will mention this title to our librarian, but I think the 2006 publication date may be an issue. Our district has guidelines that she has to follow unless we are discussing a classic.
HYR Whale Talk* by Chris Crutcher
?
*Another book being considered.
HYR Whale Talk* by Chris Crutcher
?*Another book being considered.
Yes. Whale Talk is another one I've taught. Racism, among many others things, in rural Idaho. I don't think there are books by Chris Crutcher that I wouldn't recommend. He's a former social worker and it shows. Though he's got a brand new one I haven't read.Caveat: characters in this novel call other characters terrible names, and do terrible things. I had parents sign a permission slip because just about everything I taught was on the banned or challenged book list that year.
What about the more contemporary The Hate U Give or Dreamland Burning or All American Boys?
(Schenectady HS-- or maybe it was MS students-- read All American Boys in a lesson with police. So my book group read it, too.)
All of these are realistic, so not your normal thing, oh hey, could you teach something you like, maybe like HYR Daniel José Older's YA uf set in BrooklynShadowshaper

HNR. Yet. I am some number of books behind in this series. Maybe this summer I can catch up!HYR
by Colson Whitehead The Underground Railroad? It's alternate history, sf and really good and unusual.
HNR, but I've added it to the list of birthday books for my hubby. Thanks for the recommendation!

HNRHYR Warlight by Michael Ondaatje
? I'm not recommending it in this case, just asking. I've borrowed it from the library and not yet gotten around to it.
Yes! I was given a copy in 2012, by a member of the press who interviewed a lot of ya sf/f authors. I gave it five stars. (She doesn't work there anymore.)HYR Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
? I've just started rereading it for my RL book club next week.

HNR.Did you see one of the reviews here on GR that said listen to Terry Gross' interview on WHYY "Fresh Air" with the author and the football player first.
Here's one that may be for you or your husband:
Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo" by Zora Neale Hurston
. This book was written from 1927-1932, but only published this year.
I will definitely keep it in mind for my husband's birthday this summer. He loves reading about odd bits of American history. Thanks.
