As mentioned in a previous post, this book is not "what it says on the tin" as the tin (Goodreads blurb) says A fast-paced, witty and gripping historical crime series .
While there is a gentle underlying wit in many places, the book is not fast paced, and not really a crime novel, although a crime takes place within the story.
Set in 1820's penal colony Australia, and told from the POV of a convict who was an educated man. While the harshness of the era was apparent, there was only one scene that was overtly brutal, although the possibility of brutality (including to the local indigenous population) was always there.
I cannot recall another book that I would say this book is "like" although there are familiar devices throughout. In spite of the fact that it wasn't what I was expecting, or perhaps because of it, I very much enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone with an interest in the period.

When Rankin finished writing the Rebus series in 2007 with Exit Music, I was a bit sad, but thought the series had been finished on a good note. I struggled to enjoy his new Malcolm Fox character/series as much as I had Rebus, but that's the way it goes, I thought.
When Rankin brought Rebus back in 2013 with Standing In Another Man's Grave : I was a little underwhelmed, and concerned that the series may be in decline.
But last week I read Saints of the Shadow Bible (4★) and now audiobooked Even Dogs in the Wild .
I think that Dogs is Rankin and Rebus at his very best. There are a number of unexpected developments in this book. The genuine and growing friendship with Malcolm Fox, Rebus again in retirement, but not drinking himself to death, instead veering towards something resembling contentment, and at times something that appears to be cheerfulness!
Although retired Rebus is back officially helping Siobahn as a "civilian consultant". Like Roarke! I thought. No... "like Sherlock Holmes" said Rebus.
Another difference with this book is that the MC rotates between Rebus, Fox, Siobahn and making a return from the supposed near dead, Big Ger Cafferty.
Loved it, and looking forward to the next one.
