Rodi Szoke (rodiszoke) | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Rodi Szoke. I live in Texas and I've been immersed in Fantasy and Sci-Fi stories since my early years. I love movies and reading. Unfortunately most of the books I read nowadays are related to my career (my day job is Information Technology). I am new to Goodreads and I would appreciate some guidance and recommendations about books I should read. I am currently reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, by the way.

It's great to meet you all.

If you like stories driven by characters you'll love in a world you'll want to return to over and over again, read the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold, starting with Shards of Honour (the first half of Cordelia's Honor). One of the best contemporary sci-fi series.

If you like military action with humor and politics, read John Scalzi's Old Man's War.

If you want to read a fascinating, science-heavy story of immense scope (and are patient enough to put up with lengthy data dumps), read Seveneves by Neal Stephenson.

If you're interested in stories with fascinating ideas, about consciousness, identity, gender and society, read Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.

If you like epic fantasy at all, read A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.

If you want to read the most fascinating and original fantasy in decades, read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin.

I’m also passionate about music, mythology, and history and its mysteries. I have a degree in literature and a PhD in molecular biology, and I earn a living as a professional writer.
I’m always interested in discussing anything book related!

message 5807: by Jacen (new)

Jacen Aster | 57 comments I was born very young, and of clearly irrefutable sanity. I'm generally an anti-social misanthrope with delusions of awesomeness. Also, delusions about someday owning a Dark Wizard's Tower, and scaring the hell out of the townsfolk I build it near. But that, of course, goes without saying. I mean, clearly all of us have that desire, so it really just feels silly to mention it. Like mentioning your pet lizard-bear or your angelic ex who's really the nicest soul you'll ever meet. Entirely too normal to be remarkable.

I'm an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy, having read far too many of both to ever list even a fraction. I'm also an author, but I'll keep my crowing about that to the author's section :-).

I hope, sincerely, that everyone survives the sanity I bring along with me. Sadly, not all people can handle the influence of so much rationality and choose to fall off the face of the Earth in order to escape my influence.

Adam Simpson | 1 comments Hi all, I'm Adam. I am a long term lover of Sci Fi and Fantasy, which I am sure comes as no surprise when you look at where I am posting.

I do like my books with a healthy dose of satire where appropriate, which is why to this day my favorite authors are Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams.

I am currently jousting with the publishing world, having just published my first novel on KDP. I will most likely run a giveaway for some hard copies once I have managed to get createspace to accept my damn cover PDF!

In the mean time I look forward to reading some books with you guys.

Thanks for reading!
Adam

Cathy (khiatons-cathy) | 11 comments I'm Cathy Smith. A Mohawk despite the white bread name. Soft scifi and fantasy remind me of the legends and folktales my Elders used to tell me in culture class, and strike me as legends and folktales of the modern age. I'm always on the look out for a good read and scifi and fantasy are my favorite genres.

Alan Denham (alandenham) | 256 comments Cathy wrote: "Soft scifi and fantasy remind me of the legends and folktales my Elders used to tell me..."
You may find some of Charles De Lint's work falls within your field of interest - sorry, can't remember the titles at present, and he covers quite a range.

message 5811: by Cathy (new)

Now that's awkward ! I recently read Moonheart, which mixes Celtic and Native American mmythologies - and that is fairly typical of his work, and can stand alone . . . . but it is fairly well on in a sequence of stories set in Tamson House. Now its a long time since I read any of the others in that series and I really can't remember the titles, so . . . try Moonheart, see what you think. Blue the biker is a great character!

message 5813: by Preksha (new)

Preksha | 1 comments Hi, I'm Preksha from Bombay, I love reading of course. I have read loads of fantasy books though I haven't had a chance to read much of Scifi but definitely looking forward to it. I'm currently reading Empire of Storm by Sarah J Maas.

Neil Imber | 6 comments Hi. I'm Neil and have joined the group today. I've always loved fantasy and sci-fi but am relatively new to the genre again in adult life. I've found myself with some spare time recently having take a career break and decided I would join a group to get some inspiration! I'm currently reading The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss and absolutely hooked. Almost done after 3 days and excited to pick up the next book. I've just received the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson boxed set from Amazon so looking forward to reading that!

I'm going to get the current reads although looks like I need to catch up and read Leviathan Wakes first. I've never read a space opera so I'm intrigued!

Other stuff..... am 46 years old and live in Birmingham UK. By day I'm a Chartered Accountant working for a large international firm. My real passion in life is heavy metal music which I know tends to match fairly regularly with a love of SF and Fantasy

Any F/SF addict in Birmingham area should consider joining the Birmingham SF group http://www.birminghamsfgroup.org.uk/.
It is some years since I have been involved (don't live there any more!) but some of the seriously old members might remember me.

One of the books this group is reading this month, Pawn of Prophecy, is very readable and not too long. It's very classic-style fantasy.

The other monthly book, Caliban's War, is the sequel to Leviathan Wakes which is excellent space opera.

I recommend both of those.

message 5820: by [deleted user] (new)

Leviathan wakes it is, cool I think this is gonna be my second sci-fi book that I will read, and yea I have a little more question about leviathan wakes, is the book telling a story in a persons view? I mean like a character or first person telling story? Sorry I'm new to this thing.

message 5821: by David (new)

David Holmes | 481 comments It's third person ("he did this", not "I did this"). The story is told from the point-of-view of two different characters.

message 5822: by [deleted user] (new)

Ow is that so, well I kinda more into like "first-person" books, any suggestions about that kind of book?

message 5823: by David (new)

David Holmes | 481 comments If you want a first-person sci-fi novel, try Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Which probably should have been my first suggestion, actually.

I read constantly in high school, but for some reason in college I cut back on reading for recreation dramatically and didn't really start again until my 30s.

It helps to have a book club to make reading a more social experience. I looked around for a local SF&F book club with no success, and ended up here instead.

message 5826: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne I haven't cut back on my reading for recreation as whole, but I most certainly haven't been reading SF&F as much as I used to. I looked around a little bit to see what type of groups were available and thought this looked like a great place for me. A little motivation can go a long way.

Struggling to embrace grimdark, in truth, but like Peter V Brett. I'm also an author with Gollancz, but don't hold that against me - I like reading books too! Hurrah!

Lieke Hi everyone!
For a school project I am doing research on Blackwell's (a British book retailer) and I need some people who have been there at least once to fill in my questionnaire (who better to turn to than the book community!).
This only takes 2-3 minutes (I swear!) and it would help me out so much :) Would anyone like to fill it in? THANKS!

Sharon H | 1 comments Welcome Alex!. My name is Sharon and I have been reading science fiction forever. Since I am 62 forever is a long time. I joined too be able to share since my life doesn't have many fellow fans.

Just read Faith Hunters latest books on a wood creature written in a homey style with down to earth people. Don't find that much. I usually have been reading about little girls suddenly discovering they have the power of the universe and didn't know it. I miss Bishop and Butler. Why did Bishop stop after having such a successful character?

What is the rule about sharing books?
Sharon

message 5833: by Michael (new)

Michael Kennedy (teelelen) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Michael Kennedy and I am currently a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois University Carbondale studying geography and environmental resources. I joined this group because I have been a lifelong fantasy and sci-fi enthusiast. I remember being 9 years old purchasing my first fantasy novel, The Sword of Shanarra and becoming enamored with the series.

I joined this group because I am looking for new fantasy books to read, and I am having difficulty finding things that really appeal to me or have what I am looking for. Some of the books and series have reads are:
-The Shannara Books (all of them)
-The Wheel of Time serires
- A Song of Fire and Ice
- The Earth Sea Cycle
- Various Michael Moorcock books
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- The Harry Potter Series
- Necromancer
- The Sword of Truth Series
- Middle Earth Books
- Ender's Game
- Prince of Fools
- Half a King, Half the World and Half a War
- The Dark Elf Trilogy
- The Blade Itself
- Steve Erikson's books
- The Witcher series

I am here looking for some good recommendations on either some high/epic fantasy and swords and sorcery fantasy novels that include other races prominently. The other races don't have to be the traditional ones like elves or dwarfs, but I would like to read something with a lot of world building, magic and epic quests as well. I heard the book The Dwarfs was a good read, but I don't want to waste my time by starting a new book and ending up becoming bored. If any of you have any at all, it would be greatly appreciated!!! I have been disappointed by the books Prince of Fools and Shattered Sea trilogy because they aren't true fantasy novels in my opinion, but simply futuristic post-apocalyptic. I am looking forward to being a part of this group!!!!

message 5834: by Raymond (new)

Raymond Walker (raynayday) Hi Michael, I would recommend Fritz Leiber, David Gemmell, Paul Hoffman, Raymond Fiest and if you do not mind going right out there, Dan Simmons Hyperion and Endymion, (possibly also Olympos) based on what you have enjoyed and disliked.
I have read almost all the books you mentioned. Another odd one that you may like is Julian May's Many coloured Land series.
David and leigh Eddings, the belgariad series, I think would also suit you but stop after the first series of five books. The second series is ok but having hit upon a winning formula it is really just the first series repeated, with a bit added in and so ultimately disappointing.
Also if you do not mind something aimed at a slightly younger audience. (harry potter ish age group) Alan Gardeners "the Wierdstone of Brisingammen" and the "Moon of Gomrath" are also magical. I am also here to try and find more good books to read. Hope this helps, and if you try any that I have suggested , i hope you like them.
Ray

message 5836: by Raymond (new)

Raymond Walker (raynayday) I am hoping to find recommendations for new books to read. I have always been a sci-fi and fantasy fan but often read in many other genres.
It seems difficult these days to chose a good sci-fi or fantasy series and I have failed often recently to chose wisely. So I thought that I would ask the worthies here for some advice and recommendations.
I like good fantasy books and series, similar to those quoted by Michael (above) and also I love science fiction, from imaginative, sci-fi, (Iain M Banks, Issac Asimov, Dan Simmons etc) to hard sci- fi (Benford, Brin, Bear, Cobley etc) yet much of what I have read recently is aimed at teens or young adults and does not interest me that much. Any recommendations that you wish to send my way would be gratefully appreciated.

Since you "read in many other genres" and are UK-based I am going to go away from the usual subjects here. Do you read crime/police procedural? With a light approach? Try Stuart Pawson.

Hi Alan, strangely one of my fall back genres when I can find nothing else is crime/detective novels, in fact that is what I am reading at the moment. A police procedural though it is not light in anyway at all. The Girl in the Ice by Robert Bryndza.
I have also really enjoyed Chris Bookmyre's light hearted approach to the genre and so I shall try Stuart Pawson. I just bought the first of them, "The Picasso Scam", as it is remarkably cheap Thank you for the recommendation.

message 5841: by Loren (new)

Loren Peterson Hey, I'm Loren and I'm currently a high-school senior. This is the first group I've joined on Goodreads. I can't really remember a time before my dad was reading me Harry Potter or LOTR before bed. My favorite book is "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. I try to read a variety of genres, but the majority of the books I really love are Sci-Fi and Fantasy. A few of my favorite books I've read this past year are:

Dune by Frank Herbert
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
The Gentleman Bastards Series by Scott Lynch
The Secret History by Donna Tart
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Saga the comic-book by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

I also re-read the King-Killer Chronicles.

I'm excited to get reading with ya'll!

T. K. Elliott (Tiffany) (t_k_elliott) Hi, I'm Tiffany. Mostly a fantasy reader - particularly urban fantasy. But I'll read pretty much anything, if desperate enough. Even toffee papers.

Favourite authors: Jim Butcher, Lois McMaster Bujold, Terry Pratchett.

I've been on Goodreads for around a month as I've been trying to get back into reading at the volume I was doing so before university. I've discovered my taste in novels has changed since then so I'll likely be around seeking out recommendations!

Keith (keithdale) | 21 comments Keith here. I read 60-80 books a year that are mostly science fiction and fantasy. I joined to be exposed to books and authors I may not be familiar with that come up in group discussions. I have been on Goodreads for a few years now but only recently joined groups. I participated in the group read "The Grace of Kings" for December and while it wasn't one of my favorites I liked trying something new.

Ian Totten | 2 comments HELLo,
I'm an author and undead thing who lives somewhere hot. I read a little of everything, from Dune to A Brief History of Knowledge and I take from all to craft my stories. My interest in Sci-fi/fantasy started around the 3rd grade when I read TLOTR and really took off when out family friends the Hilldebrant brothers gave me a bunch of their calendars. Since then I have grown pretty selective on what I read in those genres.

message 5850: by S.C. (new)

S.C. Eston (sceston) Hi all and all the best for 2017,

I joined this group in the hope of connecting with like-minded readers and get some good recommendations.

I'm 40 and from New Brunswick Canada. I started reading fantasy in my teenage years, with the Dragonlance Chronicles from Weis & Hickman. I lost interest a bit in fantasy for a while and regained it about a year ago when I read Elantris by Sanderson.

I got into Sci-Fi later, about 10 years ago and have read many books by Clarke, Robinson and Asimov since then.

I'm a part time fantasy and sci-fi writer, and like many established writer recommend, I read as much as I can to learn from the best in the genre.

I recently completed The Stand by Stephen King, and will most likely continue the Mistborn series by Sanderson next.

Looking forward to connecting.

Steve
