Former Introduction Thread

I was born in '74 and live near Chicago right now. Have my BA and MATL and starting to research universities for the PHD. I teach first or second grade...depending on the year. I am married and I have on daughter.
Love fantasy and science fiction and have been looking to read more diverse voices in the field lately. I'm excited to start reading this months books...as soon as they arrive. :)
Last few books I have read:
Binti
The Fifth Season
Tarzan: King of the Apes (get into a late 1800s to early 1900s mood every once and a while)
Leviathan Wakes
Magician: Apprentice (reread)
Thanks!

To be honest, I love books such as Ready Player One, Harry Potter Series, Enders Game, and The Warded Man; just to name very few. I believe that if I can find a group of people that I can honestly talk to about what I'm reading and truly get excited to talk about what's going on in the world I'm immersing myself in, I will read more and take that first step to being A FULL TIME READER!! YAY!!
Any questions, feel free to message me and hey, like I said, here to make friends.

I love reading and I actually had about 352 books in my bookshelves at one point.
I've read books from Tamora Pierce, Terry Brooks, Trudi Canavan, David Eddings, Traci Harding, Kristen Britain, Mary Hoffman, Patrick Rothfuss, Fiona McIntosh, Maria V. Snyder, Raymond Feist, Terry Goodking, Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Michael J. Sullivan and a few others.

Cheers :)

I read a lot of comics last year; I'm up to date on Saga (I read the Volumes so I'm waiting on 7. I am a POS when it comes to single issues.) I also read Paper Girls, Monstress, Nimona, issues of SnotGirl, Hadrian's Wall, etc. Picked up Dear Creature but haven't got around to it yet. Last year the best book I read was Ready Player One so I am in the same bucket as all you other saps who are hanging on to the edge of your seat waiting for the Spielberg movie.
I've had a movie tie-in edition of LoTR literally since Fellowship came out in 01 and I've always considered myself a LoTR fangirl -- but secretly I was a hack bc I never read anything by Tolkien besides Roverandom and the LoTR appendixes. So yeah, reading LoTR was/is a bucket list item for me and I can happily say I finished Fellowship last week. Breaking news: Frodo is still the worst.
Currently I am reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep because A. I've been putting it off forever and I'm a huge fan of Blade Runner, and B. Blade Runner 2049 is coming out this year so I must appease the Ryan Gosling Gods with my sacrifice. It's not really a sacrifice though because I am in love with it and almost love it more than the movie. *gasp*
Please don't tell Ridley Scott.
Besides all that I like twisted stuff, especially movies. I am a movie junkie and literally my entire living room wall is covered in them. I have a small problem. My sense of humor is sick and I should probably see a psychologist.
During the day I am a content writer and do freelance artist work outside of my 9 to 5, so I am a busy and generally all around annoyed person who imagines tripping like 15 people a day; also could eat Taco Bell for every meal.
I've literally been on GoodReads since 2009 and this is the first time I've really been active, so please don't chuckle at my abysmally low number of friends. Instead, friend me; or like, at least message me or something. I am a lonely wanderer on the sci-fi streets attempting to read all the books and draw/write all the things and maybe find time to watch a movie or finally finish Twin Peaks.
Anywho even if all of my bs rambling doesn't convince you, at least my progress updates on my Currently Reading shelf are entertaining af. At least.. I hope.

BRO. Ready Player One is the jam. I froth at the mouth every time I read a movie update

If Goodreads is supposed to be a friend-collection contest, I've been doing it wrong :). No, my pathology has been to treat it as a total-books-read contest, and this group has made me despair of that goal as well, when I see members of this group with thousands of books on their "read" shelves.
After joining Goodreads about a year ago I fumbled around for a while, not sure what to do with it. A couple months ago I lamented the fact that nobody in my life seemed interested in talking SF&F books and decided to escape to the Internet instead. I looked at groups on Goodreads to join and picked this one because its bookshelves seemed most interesting to me.

Welcome! This group has a few people reading Gardens of the Moon this month.
As for recommendations... my recommendation would be to branch out into science fiction :) If you enjoy long epic fantasy sagas, you might enjoy long epic space opera sagas like The Expanse, starting with Leviathan Wakes.

Reading became a hobby when I picked up my first copy of Homeland, by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore. His hero, Drizzt Do'Urden, inspired something inside me that made me want to be able to tell a story like that. Between the ages of 13-15 I read his books back to back, and shortly after, on this old Pentium III computer, I dabbled on the keyboard and discovered yet another hobby. Ever since, writing was an indulgence, whenever my imagination needed to be put on paper.
Even though I'm a big fan of fantasy, I published my first sic-fi in November 2016. I guess growing up with movies like Star Wars, Blade Runner, Independence Day etc. had its effect on me. It's hard to choose which genre is my favourite, so I guess I'm in the right place.
Apart from pretty much every book written by R.A. Salvatore, the works of Tolkien, Ed Greenwood and J.K. Rowling played a part in soothing my reading frenzy. In terms of sci-fi, well, the usual suspects: Isaac Asimov, Joe Haldeman, some H.G. Wells and Arthur C. Clarke and John Scalzi were prominent in my book shelves.
I tried to keep my post short, but I failed.
Thank you for listening...
Chris G. Wright, over and out.

I'm Jenny, 45 years old, from the mountains of northeastern California, but living in the city for now. It is a goal of mine to return to the country someday... someday.
My college degree is in science, but I would say my interests are more on the well-rounded / mobius strip side of things. I've always been enamored with the 'greek ideal' of a well-rounded human. (Aaand now I'm thinking of what that means in terms of a mobius strip... )
I love to read, but I love to do other things too, so I don't end up on the 100 book per year list or anything like that. Sometimes I'd rather cook a nice meal, or hike up a mountain, or (gasp) watch TV. I'm not a speed reader, and I'd rather chuck a book out completely than skim or suffer through bad writing.
I like books that have some underlying philosophical thought, or that transport me somewhere so completely that I believe I'm there for a minute- especially if that place does not really exist. I like tragedies overcome by the human spirit. I like Shakespeare. I like the slightly preposterous, and observational works when they have the right wit. I like the sparse. Sometimes I like an action/mystery or non-fiction, but that's less frequent.
I drive a lot, so I listen to a lot of audiobooks. It is a very different experience from reading the book, which is different altogether from seeing the movie, and I enjoy all three.
Literary accomplishments? I finished Moby Dick! Okay, it was an audiobook. But still.
Looking forward to chatting with you. :)

I love audio books as well and have tend to read books slowly as I have a hard time finding time to read. Most of my free time is taken up with family and my writing. I do set aside 30 minutes a day to read because I do get a lot out of it and it helps me to be a better writer.

Great to be here, my name is Kyle. I recently joined Goodreads within the past month or two, and I can tell it's going to be an addiction. I love everything from History, Fantasy, and Fict..."

Hi Chris. Great to get to know you. I'm Matt, also a Sci-fi/Fantasy novelist. Some of my favorite writers are Clark and Asimov as well, along with some newer writers that I'm slowly discovering. I found it interesting to read that you had to sell your motorbike to fund your book. I understand, I had to set up a Crowed Sourcing Campaign last yet to have enough money to buy enough books for Comicon in Phoneix Arizona. It was a great event and I sold half my inventory of my two books. Drop me a line any time if you want to discuss indie publishing or great sci-fi writers.

Hi Trisha, I'm Matt, nice to meet you. I have a friend who has been trying to get me to read some of Terry Pratchet's work. I love abstract work, but I've been finding some it hard to follow. I've been listening to a couple of audio while at the gym. Maybe I need to give it more attention. I was wondering what your thoughts were on his work.

Ah, Salvatore. Can't get enough of Salvatore and Drizzt Do'Urden. It's how my passion for writing began... Really looking forward to his next book, whatever that may be

Hi Matt, an honour to meet you. I'm currently reading the Big Book of Science Fiction, which is very inspiring whenever I'm facing a blank page, or just need to travel somewhere else that isn't my story.
Had to make the decision: sell motorcycle and have funds to support the book (which was done on a tight budget anyway) or keep the motorcycle and struggle for another 6 months. "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going." Wondering what else I'll need to sell to fund book 2. lol
I have no interest in making millions. I just want to be one of those science fiction writers who will be remembered for taking readers to a different world and giving them a hell of a ride. One day... hopefully. Mother always told me to dream big.

Sorry Sarah, I thought that making specific mentions and adding links was forbidden. I was just talking in general--no sly intentions. Duly noted though.

Not instantly into Pratchett? Seriously, I would advise reading rather than listening.
If you are willing to study a bit before you dive in, take a look here - but be warned, its a long discussion!

Sarah, Didn't mean to step on anyone toes, but we were not promoting out work, posting links or even mentioning titles. It was simply an exchange of experience. If you are going to consider that a "Violation" then I can find another group.

Typically people are more interested in learning how to work within the policy but you're always free to leave if you would prefer.

A little strong there, I think. You are correct to point out that this is not a promotion site, but I think you are unduly abrupt in the way you have done so - the guys have already apologised for a very minor infringement of the rules. You might like to consult with your colleagues.

Now let's get back on topic please.
Welcome everyone! We have rousing conversations about books, and if you're an author who'd like to chitchat or talk shop, there are, as Sarah Anne has said, a ton of authors who chime in to posts in the Authors section, along with usually really interesting viewpoints from readers!
I think you'll find the rules are there because (as has happened in most of the other groups I've tried to join) it simply became a laundry list of people promoting themselves, which actually sucks, both as a reader and for those trying to be heard above the noise. Sarah Anne spends a lot of energy keeping us from that fate.
Hope to see you in the forums and that you'll join some of our group reads! Good luck with your endeavors!

I've been a member of this group for a couple of years but only really lurked on the edges (and read as many of the picks that I could of course) but this year I've decided to get a bit more involved. I'm also highly absent minded so there's a fair chance I've already said hi.... apologies!
I'm at stay at home mum at the moment, indie author and avid cake baker. I've been reading sci fi and fantasy since my early teens and it remains my favourite genre, I adore the fact that I'm not even close to having read everything out there and that the umbrella of sci fi & fantasy encompasses such a large variety of books.
Currently reading Lock In by Scalzi with several picks from 2016 on my kindle waiting. I just finished Black Prism by Brent Weeks so I'm going to have to go find the rest of that series. I'm a die hard Pratchett fan with The Long Earth series waiting for me as well. My TBR list is ridiculously long but that doesn't stop me from adding to it copiously. I do read out of this genre as well.
I review everything I read, don't believe in rehashing the blurb and it has to be a real stinker for me to not even finish.
Really pleased to be a bit more involved in this group - loving the monopoly idea!
Cheers, Claire

Yeah . . . I just hit the 'Compare Books' button on your profile page, and saw how many of our 'books in common' were there because you have them flagged for reading soon. Good luck, that's an awful big pile!

I like a challenge! Plus I'll never be without a suggestion for a new read :)

Hello, Claire, it is great to meet you. In the great sea of science fiction there are islands of agreement on great works, but plenty of undiscovered countries as well! Happy exploring.

I'm a Canadian ex-pat now living in Harrogate, UK with my Italian wife, British daughter and Israeli cat (not your usual souvenirs!). For most of my adult life I was a biochemist (which also explains the world-hopping). However, I discovered my interest in the world was too broad, and my interest in benchwork too small, so I move on.
I've since transitioned to the world of books where I write science fiction (mundane and far future), YA, and children's. My reading preference is for science fiction, however, I also enjoy urban fantasy. My favourite thing to discover in a book is an author who's taken a worn trope and come at it from a unique angle, giving it new life.
When not writing or studying books, I volunteer at local primary schools, putting on writing workshops or code clubs (did I mention I also love technology?).

I actually joined the group several weeks ago and have just been kind of lurking, checking things out! I have a large range of genres and styles that I like but SciFi/Fantasy are my go-to favorites! I am very excited to join this group and find all new authors to indulge in and a like-minded group to discuss things with!
I look forward to talking with many of you!
Sonja

I'm new here myself, Sonja, but I'm sure I speak for everyone in welcoming you here as well. A lot of impressive people here, and some stimulating discussion.

I'm Bunny (yes, that genuinely is my name) and I currently live in Norwich, England, although I've also lived in Cambridge and London.
I'm a single mum of one without a job and therefore flat broke (but happy).
I'm currently on a Russian literature kick (does Bulgakov count as fantasy?), although I love the sci fi and fantasy genres. My favourites are all the Discworld books, Robin Hobbs' Farseers series, Neil Gaiman and C S Lewis. I also love a good dystopian story in the vein of 1984, Brave New World, WE, etc.
I also love music, especially the electronic kind, and can't go a day without listening to something... seriously, it's pretty much the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is put some music on, and it stays on (in different forms) throughout the majority of the day. Fortunately, my son loves music too and is quite happy to whittle away the time engaging in 'who can do the stupidest dance' competitions.
The first fantasy book I remember reading was Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett; I remember it was the first time I'd ever laughed out loud at a book. From that moment on I was hooked on Pratchett and still believe he's one of the best authors in any genre.
So, think that's about it. Looking forward to getting stuck into some discussions - so long as my ropey wifi connection allows it!

Welcome, Bunny!
I happen to love England. I managed to visit several times in the 90s, but not recently. My favorite haunt was Hampshire County around Andover. I liked it so much I used parts of it as a setting for a few scenes in my novels.
I know what it's like to be broke, I'm in education. The nice thing about reading and writing is that it costs very little.
Welcome, and I pray for your prosperity.

Ah, that been on page 101. I only got so far as page 100, so I clearly gave up just before it got interesting...

Hi Andrew,
I've read some Robin Hobb but beyond that, not read much medieval fantasy (so far). Have you got any recommendations for stuff that isn't too grim-dark?

I'm Luiz, 24 years old, from Brazil and books have been a passion of mine since i was little.
If I were to choose a favorite genre, I'd say a tie between historical fiction and fantasy, but I like all kinds of books really. The funny thing is, when I was younger I actually did not care that much for the fantasy genre and only after I started reading ASOIAF, a few years ago, my eyes opened and now i'm constantly searching for new books/series in this wonderful genre.
Well, i think that's it! Sorry for the broken english and if random portuguese words appear in the forums, blame my phone auto-correct XD

Robin Hobb is great. I would recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora (thieves guild meets Oceans Eleven) and The Name of the Wind. More or less any fantasy novel that takes place in a pseudo medieval city will have you feeling right at home.
If your looking for touch of fantasy horror try Stone Angels. It's set in Norwich Cathedral, but don't worry, the statue in the book doesn't really exist. At least I couldn't find it there last time I looked:)

I keep running into a lot of military SF, especially in there indie stuff, which is OK, but not really what floats my boat.
I'm not a big volume reader, but here's some of what I've read lately:
Destroyer by Chris Fox
An Astronaut's Guides to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield (NF)
Bloodline by Claudia Gray
Poseidon's Children trilogy by Alastair Reynolds
Leviathan Wakes by James Corey
Reamde by Neal Stephenson
Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold
Always looking for more to read!
Rick Allen

What's it like being undead? I've always wanted to ask.
....Actually, that gives me an idea for a short story. A day in the life of an undead lich, or something similar. Might have to write that.
