Thanks for your service, John!
I'm Nicholas Austin and I got into these genres from reading/watching all sorts of related books/shows/movies. Based in Austin and looking for some good sci-fant reads to dive into at the local breweries/parks with my pup. Glad to be a part of this group!
Welcome John, Lehi and Nicholas!
You came in time to help us pick out October's sci-fi detective book! And in a couple of days (how is it already the end of August??) we'll be starting Pushing Ice and Arcadia!
Hope to see you in the discussion :-)

Thanks Allison! And the whole month I'm just here asking myself how we're already 8 months into this year ;)

My all-time favourite book is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - which conveniently is one of the August books! I also love essentially anything by Brandon Sanderson, the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and everything by J.R.R Tolkien. Sci-fi wise, my favourite book is probably The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, but I also recently read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers and loved that.
I'm looking forward to discovering some new great books!

I wish I had joined here earlier, I should have joined here earlier! And since I did I have mostly been looking around, reading, without contributing or being too active. But it's about to change now, when time has been redirected to my favour! Yay!
I'm 44 yrs, living in Stockholm, Sweden. I've always been a daydreamer, role-play nerd in my teens, and now later in life -a fantasy enthusiast! I do love Science fiction, but it is in fantasy fiction bye heart truly lies. Every since my dad put The Sleeping Dragon, by Joel Rosenberg, in my hand. I was 10 then, and I was hooked! I could hide in these wonderful worlds, embrace and acknowledge the weird creations, and I felt more at ease and calm there than amongst the cool kids at school to whom I couldn't relate at all...
Then the bible-thin pages of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, and of course the story itself, completely blew my mind! And somewhere around the age of 14 and the Shannara Trilogy, came the need to write myself. To create my own magic worlds. And so I did. Been writing ever since, when time is given. Just recently I just published my first novel on Amazon as Kindle and paperback. Felt great! Her Time -A Merchant Queen Rising
I will be lurking about here from now on. Posting and being active, as should have been earlier.

My name is Karen and I am a book addict. I am presently 58 and have been a Sci-Fi/Fantasy junkie ever since I can remember. I blame Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Lewis Carroll and J.M Barry as my 'gateways' into the harder stuff like William Gibson, J.R.R. Tolkien, Glen Cook and Arthur Clarke.
I tend to read a lot and forget to check in here for a while, so I won't promise to be a prolific poster, but at the moment I am trying to keep in touch with old friends as well as (hopefully) make new ones since shutting down my Facebook account.
Right now I am trying to catch up on the TBR and Read all the books challenges, so I should be around some. Or at least until work keeps me from checking here.

If I'd have to pick, my favorite authors could be P. Rothfuss, J. Abercrombie, K. Kade, B. Sanderson, G. Martin, S. Lynch or A. Ryan. I'm currently reading Steven Eriksons The Malazan Book of the Fallen series (for the first time) and I can't get any work done because it is so good!
Imogen, Jonas, Karen, Sarah, and Matti, hello, bienvenue, hei!
Hope to see you in the discussion threads! We're about to start voting on our next books, so make sure youvote for The Last Policeman and The Bear and the Nightingale vote for the books that look best to you! ;-)

Oh my bad. Don't make the same mistake, new friends, two are clearly more appealing, vote for those! And don't forget who said hi first, and is clearly more on top of such things! ^^
Ah yeah. You're right. That was your stance for this month's books, too, and now we're not reading Arcadia.
OH WAIT!
Yeah, I just threw down in book club. Someone hold my dust jacket!

bwahahahahaha! Well played, sir.
ETA I know this is a joke? But I really REALLY want to have a poll where your and Sarah Anne's pets pick the books. Maybe for one of the month's random polls? Please also document how they make their selections for err...transparency.

In reading I really enjoy science fiction with a military edge since I did serve in the military. I also read a fair bit of historical fiction and mix things up with non fiction. The job that pays the bills is my management and safety consulting firm. I also teach at a local university.
People tell me I lead an interesting life and I use those experiences in my books. I think all good stories are really about people regardless of where and when they are set. I look forward to some good recommendations for my next reads from the group.

How much of a military edge?

Usually exploration and contact has a military presence and so I enjoy those stories as I can relate to them well. I do read science fiction that has nothing to do with the military. my books involve the military involvement and response to the resultant conflict around first contact. So I enjoy David drake's "Hammers" series but also Weber's "Safehold" series. I am a big fan of Ian M Banks and his books have no real military at all.

Okay. Just wanted to check. I also happen to write sci fi.

Oh I edited the post. Not sure if you saw it before I changed it.

This is my first Goodreads post! Yay me! If I do it wrong, please be gentle.
My name is Kristen. I'm a wife and mother living in the Northeastern US. I've been a homemaker for 2 years. Before this, I was an engineer for 17 years. Software Engineering for a while and Systems Engineering for a while. My degree was in Electrical Engineering.
I've been looking for a book club for a while, but I'm just not interested in reading the books that my library book clubs are reading. I tend to read mostly Sci-Fi, and recently Fantasy.
Hello D, Adeleke and Kristen! Welcome aboard! We're about to read Arcadia, which I'm totally stoked about (there may have been some...er...election engineering on that one) and Pusheen Eyes, which is not actually the name of the book but I dislike the sound of the name of the actual book, and so will pretend it's about the sight sense of the grey Facebook cat sticker, Pusheen. I anticipate being pleasantly surprised at how untrue that is!
Hope you'll join us there or in other threads and happy reading!

Thanks for the welcome.
You should all know who I am. I am your Supreme Overlord. That is all.

I have nooo problem what so ever following Princess Leia! :)

I'm Katrina, more commonly known as Kat.
I'm 36 and I live in Stafford, Staffordshire (UK). I love to read and am currently trying to broaden my horizons regarding genres. Fantasy and Sci Fi is my firm favourite though.
I also belong to the Seasonal Reading Challenge Group, which results in some oddities appearing in my reading list that wouldn't otherwise be in there.
I love Terry Pratchett, George R. R. Martin, Christopher Paolini, Neil Gaiman, David Eddings, Iain Banks, and always enjoy finding more.
I'm currently reading (ok listening - it's an audiobook) a suspense novel - as part of broadening my horizons. I think my next Sci Fi read is going to be Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky.
I also looking for a good excuse to read The Dwarves by Markus Heitz.
Also psyching myself up for a full series binge on the following:
Terry Pratchett - Discworld (all re-reads but haven't read it in order before)
George R R Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire
They'll probably take up all of 2018 and then some between them. Looking forward to winning the lottery to give me the time to do it :-)
See you around.
Kat

I was an English teacher in secondary schools for 15 years but gave that up to look after a friend with cancer. When my husband and I realised we didn't need to work to live (renting our home covers our bills) we moved to Spain and I started writing. I can't stop now, although publishing is much harder than writing.
We're back in the UK now but still living the dream.
I read all sorts of fiction genres but have a special place in my heart for sci-fi and fantasy. I can't believe I didn't find this group sooner. Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to reading with you all.
Have fun.
Lauren

It's kind of cool that I can literally say that I studied science fiction novels in an academic setting. Weird.
Currently I'm finishing up Shades of Magic (Schwab) and Remembrance of Earth's Past (Cixin) and plan to work in Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. All series I started and then stopped because the last of the trilogies were not out at the time. I hope to join in on some discussions on novels that I've seen are to be put up within this year that I have on my bookshelf (and some I haven't read)!

I started reading SciFi/Fantasy when I was a Sophmore in High School and was looking for another book on Military History in the School Library. I found one, well almost. It was titled 'On the History of the War of the Ring.'
I figured it must be an English War. After all, they had the War of the Roses so why not one on Rings? Turns out I had picked up the first book of the Lord of the Rings series. After that, I never looked back.
Now I read mostly WWII history and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. With occasional other things thrown in, but I tend to avoid Western's and Romance.

I will let you all stay in the group. For now...

I've been a member of Goodreads for a while now, but I've never really joined the community, just used it to keep track of the books I've read and the ones I want to read. I'm a big lover of books, especially fantasy, but I don't get as much time to read as I'd like. I'm trying to change that by using every spare moment I can to grab my book and flick through a few pages. I'm currently reading a murder mystery (not my usual genre, but my other half bought it for me randomly) called The Coffin Trail by Martin Edwards which is pretty good so far. Next on my list is Godblind by Anna Stephens.
I'm not sure I could choose a favourite book, but the authors you'll mainly find on my bookshelf include Peter V Brett, Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, Jim Butcher, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Joe Abercrombie, Trudi Canavan and Jennifer Fallon. I've also got various History and Art related books mixed in there with a few classics such as Dracula and Sherlock Holmes.
I'm always looking to try new authors, so I'm excited to see what this group comes up with and recommends. Hopefully I'll be joining in with you all fairly soon! :)

Favorite authors include (just to name a few): Margaret Atwood, Hugh Howey, Diana Gabaldon (hey, there's time traveling!), Kate Atkinson, Scott Lynch, JK Rowling, and Chris Beckett.
I just finished Dark Matter by Blake Crouch (really good!) and I am currently reading Children of Eden by Chris Beckett and LOVING IT!
I have a long commute for my job (I teach college art) and therefore do most of my reading by listening to audiobooks. I am always searching the library and OverDrive to supplement my one book a month from Audible. Suggestions for good listens are always welcome!
I am really excited to be in this group as I am always looking for new books to read and people to discuss them with!

I have been a big fan of fantasy fiction and sci-fi since childhood thanks to my mother's epic narrating skills. I love immersing myself into another world and forgetting about real life for a few hours a day (at least). I do also enjoy reading other genres, however I tend to stay clear from non-fiction.
I am currently reading Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor to finish the trilogy, I then wish to start the Dark Tower series by Stephen king as soon as possible.
I love discovering new books and I am really looking forward to seeing what this group recommends!

As young retirees (in our 40's when we did), my wife and I travel extensively. Writing and reading are hobbies I can do - and have done - everywhere. I read on my phone mostly and write on a laptop which I just had to replace when my trusty Sony died a painful death last week.
I served in the Marine Corp, had a successful career in tech support and raised 3 fine sons - one of which has made me a grandpa! I snow ski, ride motorcycles, drink tequila and smoke cigars. In fact, much of my writing is done either on my deck at home bases Seattle or Scottsdale or in a cigar lounge somewhere around the globe, typically with a lit cigar from which I "draw" inspiration!
Happy to find this group of fellow readers and I look forward to seeing what you like and discovering new adventures.
