I loved the other books in this series but could only give “The Big Kahuna” a 1* rating (which I’ve never done before). Perhaps other readers will still enjoy this newest release even with its entirely different tone but it was a real disappointment for me. I prefer a trained, capable, kick a** heroine/hero - like they were both in the first 5 books.

Janeiowa | 5009 comments Nancy....I understand, but when it happens book after book on authors I used to buy, I have stopped buying. Some now want $9.99 or more for an ebook, so, I wait and get the book on a digital library borrow....and often return it the same day when it’s the same tired story ....again.

message 2524: by Cherry-Ann (new)

Cherry-Ann | 4269 comments Just jumping in here, Nancy and Janeiowa. I totally agree. There are some fav authors that keep writing to many deja vue moments. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy these at 9.99 a pop. So it's the library or used book stores for me (when I travel).

Currently reading Linda Howard's "A Lady of the West"

message 2525: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) | 1619 comments The romance authors you are talking about have never inspired me. I read a book each and moved on. I like action, mystery or humor along with my romance, which is why I really like Linda Howard's books. Straight romance usually has way to much angst and TSTL moments where I figuratively just want to throw the book against the wall, but I can't because it's a Kindle!

I'm cheap and I rarely reread so I always us the library if I can't get the ARC from NetGalley.

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 799 comments Just read the Tulip Sisters paperback and will NOT spend any more money on new Susan Mallery books. I had it in my big TBR pile and it appears she is going a direction in her writing that I don’t care to follow.

Eve (everf) | 815 comments Oh, its such a relief that I'm not the only one who's been dissatisfied by these authors. I was a little worried, its me ;)

I think its pointless to spend $9.99 on an ebook that has no plot, there's no interesting and inspiring characters, lack emotion and is all over the place and repetitive. Sadly you never know if its a hit or miss before reading it. So better paper book or library. And worse -- you can not sell ebooks on a used books store. So no enjoyment from reading and money gone.

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of romance authors I still buy and enjoy. She's very good story teller and her characters have depth and they are fun to read. I enjoy rereading her books. Many other romance authors just seem to be on an auto pilot and write for money, with not much to tell.

Nancy (gr-nancy-a) | 799 comments After all the many years of reading .. I am now realizing that I like best character-driven books.
(Recently reread Venetia by Georgette Heyer and had that eureka revelation.)
If I don’t respect and like the characters (at least ONE!) the book is a bust for me.

message 2529: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) | 1619 comments Eve, that's why it is so important to have a good group of Goodreads Friends. I always check out a book, especially a romance, to see how my Goodreads Friends reviewed it. If they didn't like it, I don't even bother.

message 2530: by Eve (last edited Oct 14, 2019 01:21AM) (new)

Eve (everf) | 815 comments @Anita, I tend to look how GR friends liked the story, whether they were positive or negative. Their opinion usually matches mine, so by now I've learned to trust their reviews and won't bother if the story was badly written, had nasty characters or weak storyline, or force myself to read on if the book has slow start but pick up e.g. from the middle ;)

@Nancy, you are so right. Likeable characters are very important part of every story. When most of the characters just lie, cheat, whine, lack the backbone, do not learn from their mistakes, won't grow as the characters, then in the end, what's the point of the story?
I remember when I read Ain't She Sweet? and Kiss an Angel, then at first I didn't like the heroines. But somehow they slowly grew to me with all the changes and growing up, and at one point I found myself rooting and really liking them. I like intricated, strong and sassy heroines the most. Linda Howard also creates very good heroines I enjoy.

message 2531: by Janeiowa (new)

Janeiowa | 5009 comments I was amused when some pretty well-known romance genre authors posted a group pic from a big event in San Antonio. I think it was five of them...and only one could I pick out....only because the pic was on her Facebook page. She gave the names of others, but none looked like their author pictures on their books or websites.

Eve (everf) | 815 comments I've started Under Currents by Nora Roberts. This story doesn't have very easy theme (overcoming childhood abuse) but so far I really like it. I enjoy the characters and writing style.

Under Currents by Nora Roberts

message 2533: by Penelope (last edited Oct 16, 2019 03:35PM) (new)

Penelope | 38 comments @Eve, The last 2 novels I have read by Nora Roberts were both serious & somewhat depressing material - Shelter in Place Shelter in Place by Nora Roberts & Come Sundown Come Sundown by Nora Roberts . The latter one, I almost didn’t finish. Had it not been for Nora’s reputation, I probably wouldn’t have. I appreciate much lighter reading these days - the news is real enough. ;)
I just finished Winning Skyhunter Winning Skyhunter (Stonefire Dragons Universe, #1) by Jessie Donovan by Jessie Donovan Jessie Donovan. It’s a light, fun paranormal dragon shifter novel, a stand-alone in a delightful series Jessie has created.
I wish Linda Howard wrote more novels like “Killing Time” or “Son of the Morning.” I loved those! Sometimes I just need to escape to another world where anything is possible - even flying! Haha. :D Readers who read only Clean novels, sadly will miss out on Jessie’s fantastic world.

Eve (everf) | 815 comments Penelope, you are right, recent books by Nora Roberts have been more depressing but she also add hope and good characters to her stories, so thankfully they are not too dark.

message 2535: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) | 1619 comments I agree with Eve and Penelope on Nora's recent romantic-suspense books. 90% suspense and 10% romance just doesn't cut it with me and the overall depressing themes are a real downer. I read to be entertained, not lectured to.

message 2536: by Janeiowa (new)

Janeiowa | 5009 comments AMEN to Penelope and Anita! The real world and news is depressing enough...I don’t read to endure more mental illness, abuse, killings and gore. I read to escape that. As Anita said so well, I’m not wanting to be lectured to. I’ve been an adult for many, many years, and I know how dysfunctional families can be and how mean and cruel people can be. I see it every day around me and on tv. I want a book to take me away from that.

I’m currently re-reading the Escape to New Zealand series where the people aren’t perfect, of course, but they are good people.

Penelope | 38 comments Insight by Deborah Raney I just finished “Insight” by Deborah Raney. I thought it was going to be a contemporary romance novel but it’s probably more a women’s fiction story. “Insight” dealt with marital issues - unfaithfulness in marriage - so pretty heavy stuff. I prefer lighter reading material but those who enjoy challenging subject matter may enjoy this a lot. It’s a Clean read and my review:

I agree about Nora’s latest books. They have taken a much darker turn, and the romance aspect is barely part of the story. It seems since she changed publishers her stories have changed too. I’m not really a fan of this new evolution, preferring her more romantic titles. I just hope her In Death series doesn’t end up morphing into something new too.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 1619 comments My library had a notice on the Overdrive e-book site warning users of what is happening. I agree with you, Jane, I'm not paying these outrageous prices for what is basically entertainment. I'm a patient person, I can wait.

message 2547: by Eve (new)

Eve (everf) | 815 comments Sorry to hear it Janeiowa. It will mean longer waiting time...
My library have 21 days for books but for more popular / newer books its 7 days. I'm fast reader, so I quickly return the books, so the waiting list would move on faster.

I guess sales are dropping, so the publisher want to force readers to buy new books. Not sure it will work though. As it is too many people no longer read, they have some other entertainment, like social media, games, netflix. If the reader will loose library option and reading habit, what then?

E-books have outrageous prices. With paper book I can re-sell it at least, not so with digital book. So I rather wait for the prices to drop or borrow from the library. Why buy only one book for $26.99 when I can get 10 books from the sales or used book store? If I buy translated book, then they are even more expensive, so its good to read in English ;)

Ehh, there are always so many books on my TBR list, so its no problem to wait till something I want becomes available ;)
