Her Deadly Secrets is the second in a series about the men of Wolfe Security who are a fierce group who protect those in need of top notch security detail. In this story, Kira - our main character - is a PI working for a legal firm who has been targeted for what appeared to be a case that was about to begin, but nothing was quite as it appeared at all. Soon there was international intrigue, bodies piling up and, most importantly, romantic sparks flying.

This book was a good thriller/romance, a lite quick read, but one that was well told. It both surprised me and made me want to read the other book in the series. Note: Although these book are about Wolfe Security, they can be read as a stand alone since the main characters change.

One of my favorite things about this book is that it follows the POV of two women, a private detective and a police detective, who played a big part investigating and breaking open the murder case this book is based on. I love to see when women are shown just as smart and capable of doing what some believe is a mans job.

Kira was a fascinating heroine to follow in this book. She's more or less just starting out as a private detective. Her mentor was just murdered in front of her and now she has to step into his shoes to not only find the killer but also link that killer to the murder case they were investigating for the defense attorney.

She's a confident woman but also knew her limitations. When the law office hired security for the defense team, she handled it very well. I love a smart and confident woman but not when she thinks she's invincible, and we don't have that with Kira.

I got to know Jeremy a bit in one of the author's Tracer books. I liked him then and I liked him now. He's the strong, silent type which happen to be my favorite. I liked that we got to see him battle with his attraction to Kira. If we didn't, I don't think these two would have been believable.

If I had one complaint, it was that Jeremy and Kira's romance was on the back burner to the investigation. I would have loved more for them but the investigation was pretty exciting to read about and really kept my attention. This is one thing I am learning about this author, she really knows how to grab your attention and keep it.

Her Deadly Secrets by Laura Griffin is the second book in the romantic suspense Wolfe Security series. Each book of this series seems to be like most romance series and has changed the main characters in the book to form new romantic connections. The common thread among the series so far has been the men of Wolfe Security hired to protect someone involved with an ongoing legal case. Having read both books of the series I can easily say that each can be read separately and do not need to be in order to be understood.

In Her Deadly Secrets Kira Vance is a freelance private investigator who gets the majority of her work from those in Houston’s legal world. Kira was meant to be heading to a meeting with the man who had mentored her in their business but when she shows up bullets begin flying with her mentor killed and she the only one escaping a bullet.

Kira is offered a job after the incident to find out what her mentor had been involved in and carry on with the case. A part of her new contract would be gaining the protection of Wolfe Security while the police track down who was involved in the attack on that meeting.

Just like the first book of the series the action kicks in right away and keeps a reader on their toes. The point of view changes among the characters keeping readers in on every angle of the story. Kira of course is the main and more dominant of the voices in the story and then there is also her love interest on the security team and the law officers involved in the case. All of it blends wonderfully in this leaving readers with some thrilling suspense and steamy romance.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Her Deadly Secrets is the second book in the Wolfe Security Series.

Kira Vance is a private investigator who's meeting her boss/mentor, Ollie Kovak at the house of their well-known client, Brock Logan, a defense attorney. She's bringing important information in regards to the case they are working on when a gunman surprises them. Her boss is shot, Brock is shot as well and a bullet grazes Kira's body.

The police are called to investigate the crime and this is where we meet another important female character, Charlotte Spears. She's a police detective, who with the help of her partner, Alex Diaz, will go looking to find the shooter.

Kira and the police will continue their investigations parallelly. But Kira is not alone. Her life is in danger and the client hires Wolfe Security to help take care of the threat. Kira is not happy with this new arrangement since she has to uncover the responsible party and there is no way she can stay sequestered in a hotel room when she needs to follow the few clues she has. Thankfully, her assigned bodyguard is Jeremy Owen, a man of few words but someone who makes Kira feel safe in all possible ways.

Laura Griffin can spin a Suspense Romance like no other. Her stories are always well organized and addictive. Once you open the first page, you're pulled into her make-believe world and nothing is as important as finishing the novel.

I love that in Her Deadly Secrets, we get two relevant female characters. Both women were strong-minded, smart and unstoppable. I like Jeremy too. He understood quite early that Kira was not another job. He tried to keep his distance but failed miserably.

I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Wolfe Security #2 - I've got high hopes for this book. I have been in a PI funk since the end of the Kinsey Millhone Series with the death of Sue Grafton. The first chapter with PI Kira Vance as the heroine and the grisly murder she escapes set up what is an awesome mystery plot. The romance is of the slow burn variety. It heats to a boil near the end and it is hot. The mystery/suspense is convoluted and had me guessing where the plot was going for a good long time.

PI Kira Vance is showing up to a meeting she hasn't been invited to in order to confront Ollie, a PI she works with, in order to meet his big client and get paid. Just after she arrives Ollie is shot and killed, Brock Logan, top Houston defense attorney, is wounded and trial prep materials are stolen. Brock decides that Kira should take over for Ollie and also that security is needed for the whole team. The deeper Kira digs, the more questions she has and the more danger she puts herself in.

Jeremy Brock is the Wolfe Security operative assigned to keep Kiera safe and he is trying really hard to put his growing feelings for her aside so he can continue to be her primary security. He knows she has a job to do and respects that and her, but he also knows how quickly things can go sideways and this case just doesn't make any sense. Everyone has secrets and someone has a lot to lose.

Excellent story. Plenty of action and suspense.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing I love about most of Griffin's books is that she combines the best of police action/security thriller with a romantic twist. She always has the best looking guys along with some bad ass women that enhance the entire story.
This book is no different and I love the twist that the female main character is a PI herself. Paired with a yummy hottie, they are in a race against time to break open in this case.
Griffin writes with zeal and I love the fact that she takes the time to know her topics well enough to make them incredibly believable. The story was a little late and a bit light on the physical romance although the build up was definitely there. Plus, the ending left a lot open for the next book in the series.
In-depth, entertaining, suspenseful, heated, and a damn well written story that you will not want to put down, Her Deadly Secrets by Laura Griffin is definitely one to grab this summer!!
Her Deadly Secrets by Laura Griffin is book 2 in the Wolfe Security series and was just as full of action as book one!
What it's about: Kira Vance is a PI in Houston and known for finding facts. But when things don't go as planned at a meeting with her mentor and client, Kira finds herself in more danger than she ever expected. A prominent lawyer enlists Kira's help on the case her mentor was working on, and hires Wolfe Security to watch over them for the duration. Kira doesn't want anyone watching over her and getting in her way, but she's about to need the help more than she knows.
I can definitely tell that Her Deadly Secrets was written by the same author as Desperate Girls. They both have the same feel and Griffin seems to use a lot of the same wording and terminologies. Not that I necessarily mind this, but I think it would be best for me if I didn't read the books back to back and had some time in between to 'forget' all the verbiage she uses. It almost seemed a bit repetitive reading them in a row.
Another trademark of Griffin's books seems to be strong female leads, both books in this series are full of them and I love that. Sassy and smart women are the funnest to read about for me so I know I would keep reading Griffin's books just for that alone. The pacing of Her Deadly Secrets was on point as well and like the first book, I sped through it and read this one in 4 hours and 22 minutes (compared to 4 hours 26 minutes for the first). This book didn't really have any courtroom drama, and instead focused more on a mystery and Kira's fact finding, yet another thing I absolutely loved.
A few of the Wolfe Security guys made an appearance in this one, but it could definitely be read as a standalone. You don't need to know what happened in Desperate Girls to read this, but I liked having read it first just because I like seeing repeat characters. Also like the first book, there are a few character viewpoints, but I felt like I got to know them all better than in the first book, and there were less which made for a better reading experience for me.
Song/s the book brought to mind: Close to Me by Ellie Goulding
Final Thought: Can I just mention how much I love the covers of these books? Her Deadly Secrets has one of my favorite covers of all time and I don't know if that makes me like the book more, but it might. This was another romantic suspense where you could easily skim or skip the sex scenes if you wanted to. It didn't take over the book, and nothing really gets too dirty until towards the end of the book which I really appreciated. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
PI Kira Vance is working with her boss Ollie on a murder case but when she arrives at their client ,the high profile lawyer Brock Logan’s home, a gunman murders her boss and steals all the files. Short on time Brock Logan hires Kira to help his team. Kira knows her boss had discovered new critical information about the case and along with Jeremy Owens her own personal bodyguard from Wolfe Security team, is determined to find out more , even though it puts her on the killer’s radar.
Her Deadly Secrets by Laura Griffin is the second book in the romantic suspense Wolfe Security series and can be read as a stand alone. It is a fast moving story with mystery, suspense, and romance which kept me thoroughly entertained. Looking forward to the next one in the series
Wow! This is a fast paced, well-written romantic suspense novel that can be read as a stand alone book, or, even better, after reading the excellent first entry in Ms. Griffin's Wolfe Security series. It is a real page turner that I could not put down! I highly recommend it. The characters are engaging and likable and the plot is compelling and intriguing.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Kira had no idea that meeting up with her boss and mentor Ollie at high priced lawyer Brock Logan's house would turn her life upside down. As private investigators hired by Logan's firm to help find information on their current trial involving a surgeon supposedly killing his wife, they've been working around the clock. Ollie claims he's found out something that will win the trial but before he can tell Kira, a masked and hooded man murders him.
Jeremy is just getting off a plane after a botched mission and wanting some rest and relaxation but Wolfe Security needs him on another protection case. Protecting lawyers seems easy but when Jeremy gets assigned to Kira he knows he's in trouble.
What had started as a straightforward PI job had spun out of control, and Kira felt as though her life had been hit by a tornado.
This is second in the Wolfe Security series but easily read as a standalone, you'll recognize some Wolfe Security members but the author takes the reader on a completely new murder case. The murder mystery is more of the focus than the romance, the lead detective on the case, Charlotte Spears, gets multiple povs throughout the story. This helped to develop and involve the reader in the murder case but definitely took time away from the romance. Kira was a fun heroine to follow along with at times, with her, somewhat, unconventional job as a PI. I struggled with her stubbornness and frustration with her protection detail, though. Her boss and friend Ollie was murdered right in front of her and she is obviously in danger because of what she might know or have in her possession but she still tries to skirt Jeremy and others assigned to her safety. She defers to them later in the story but in the beginning, it wasn't so much showing me how independent Kira was as how foolish she was.
This was going to be a hell of a case, Jeremy had suspected it the instant he'd seen the client, and it had taken about two minutes alone with her to confirm his suspicions. This woman was headstrong and sneaky as hell.
For being a lead, Jeremy wasn't a character that I felt I got to know well. We get some canned former military, PTSD, alpha, and still struggling with last mission that went wrong, background but I had no idea who this guy really was. He seemed nice, smart, and capable but five minutes after finishing the book I could never pick him out of a lineup. As the story seemed more focused on the murder mystery, Kira and Jeremy's relationship development was severely lacking for me. Their first kiss felt completely adrenaline fueled than deeper attraction. I appreciated how the author kept Jeremy focused on his job, as lives were on the line, but it also made Kira's seemingly bewilderment as to why Jeremy wanted to keep things professional even more glaring.
Her bossy voice turned him on, which was the dead-last thing he ever planned to tell her, bit it was true.
Towards the middle, the case meandered a bit and then the end had a bunch of information revealed fast, which gave a bit of anti-climatic feel. There was also some details added, multiple scenes of people having to stop talking because something like a coffee pot was too loud and secondary character traits like Logan being an alcoholic, that felt useless, unless Logan and others show up in the series again. I think romance readers will miss more romance and relationship development and murder mystery readers will miss a more gritty and whodunit feel. The writing is good and the outline is there but the details and relationships that make a story memorable for me were missing from this one. Wolfe Security still has some bachelors and I'm going to look forward to more romance to go along with their gun toting.
Kira Vance is a Private Investigator working for Ollie, the best PI around, her friend, her mentor. She's helping Ollie who is working for a very prestigious law office who is going to court soon to defend a doctor who has been charged with killing his wife.
During a meeting, a man breaks into the lawyer's house, Ollie is killed immediately, the lawyer is winged and Kira is hit with flying glass.
Twenty four hours later, the police have no suspects but one thing is perfectly clear ... a killer has Kira in his sights. They are looking for something belonging to Ollie ... his office has been ransacked, nearly destroyed ... but what do they want? and why?
The lawyer hires Wolfe Security to protect all his employees... the ones involved with his upcoming trial, and that includes Kira. She's none too happy to know that someone will be with her at all times.
Fiercely independent, Kira doesn’t expect—or want—help from anyone, least of all an unscrupulous lawyer and his elite security team. Instead, she launches her own investigation, hoping to uncover the answers that have eluded the police.
At least Jeremy Owen, former military, and an employee of Wolfe Security is not hard to look at. And though he may be attracted, his focus is on protecting Kira as more bodies fall around her.
This is a terrific Romantic Suspense, more suspense than romance, although there is sizzle and spice. It's an easy read with finely drawn characters. It's an exciting romp through the legal system that kept me riveted to the story.
Many thanks to the author / Gallery Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Romantic Suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Kira, a new-ish private investigator and Jeremy on of the security specialist with Wolfe Security are thrown together when a case Kira and her boss are working turns deadly. Jeremy is assigned to protect her, but Kira doesn’t want to be hemmed in while she’s trying to find a killer. However, she does see the wisdom of protection when it becomes clear she’s on the killer’s radar.
Kira’s is trying to piece together clues from her boss’s investigations to track down a killer, and while she has Jeremy at her back 24-7 he sort of becomes her reluctant partner in the case. Reluctant not because Jeremy doesn’t want to investigate, but because he doesn’t want Kira in any more danger than she’s in already. Of course, being in such close proximity the attraction they feel for each other becomes hard to ignore. Jeremy doesn’t want his feelings for Kira to distract him from his job to make sure she’s safe, so it’s a little dance of giving in and backing off; that is when they’re not smack in the middle of danger.
I know I’m in for an exciting, fast-paced read when I pick up one of Laura Griffin’s mysteries. While the beginning of Her Deadly Secret starts off with a bang, there was a bit of a lull until the story really took off for me, but when it did my attention was 100% consumed. Part crime procedural and part romantic suspense. Thrills interspersed with chemistry a-brewing, and stolen moments of passion. Kira and Jeremy’s story was an exciting read!
‘Her Deadly Secrets’ is the murder mystery aficionado’s sort of read—and a little different in than the usual Laura Griffin Tracers style—, as PI Kira Vance finds herself somewhat over her head investigating an associate’s murder and the hot-shot lawyer that she suddenly reports to.
But the security team that he’s called on her brings on a tagalong bodyguard that she resists, until it seems that what she’s looking at is a vicious killer who’s got her in his sights.
It’s a template that has been told many times before—variations on a theme in a way, that Kira Vance treads where many others have trodden before. As a police-procedural-type series with an intense focus on the unsolved crime, this works perfectly fine.
But the book’s billing as romantic suspense however, doesn’t, especially not when the romance has been written in awkwardly, with 2 people thrown together by force and then suddenly developing a romance when there’s a distinct lack of romantic chemistry between them.
For someone who expected a bit more of the latter after going through Griffin’s Tracers books, I was actually taken aback with surprise when the first kiss happened, left incredulous with anything that hinted of romance between them past the initial, weak attraction. In short, Kira/Jeremy as a pairing were sidelined here so much that I hesitated to even call this a connection (as hurriedly as it was developed) in favour of tying all the loose ends of the plot up.
It isn’t to say that the book isn’t written with Griffin’s usual aplomb: meticulously planned and executed with the kind of writing that pulls you in.
But the storytelling felt somewhat unbalanced—exciting at the start, only to head, rather frustratingly, into a lacklustre and sagging middle—along with a romance that hardly took off. In short, ‘Her Deadly Secrets’ is probably a book suited to those who prefer the journey of uncovering the whodunnit mystery than following the emotional development of the protagonists.
The storytelling in Her Deadly Secrets was superbly executed! I was drawn into the investigation as it progressed and there was plenty of excitement when the investigators started to close in on the truth. I liked the balance between a police procedural and a crafty whodunit. It was filled with action, suspense, and characters that were memorable. It was good that this story had multiple points of views because knowing Jeremy’s thoughts helped a lot in understanding what was taking place. Without his thoughts some of the scenes would not have been received well because they seemed to come out of nowhere. Overall, once I started reading this book I could not set it down and I am very excited to see what comes next in the Wolfe Security series!
I'm a huge fan of the Tracer series and just don't think this series is at the same level. I liked elements of this plot but felt the middle of the book slowed down. I thought I'd read this in a day (two max), but it took a solid 3 days as it was easy to put down. I'm not real big on insta-lust so that impacts me some, but not that much. I get tired of security detail sleeping with the subjects they are guarding. It's such a cliche with this type of book.
Still, I liked it better than the first book in this series.
I've given this a B- at AAR, so that's 3.5 stars rounded up.
Her Deadly Secrets is the second in Laura Griffin’s  Wolfe Security series which débuted last year with Desperate Girls.  Unlike the author’s long-running  Tracers  series, in which the stories revolve around the workings of a high-tech crime lab, and thus have a strong focus on forensics, the  Wolfe Security  novels feature the operatives of an elite private security company and their protectees, and have more of a straightforward murder/mystery vibe.  I’ve enjoyed a number of books by this author, but while the suspense storyline in this one is well-done, the romance is really disappointing and quite honestly, the story would have worked perfectly well without it.
Kira Vance is a hard-working private investigator with a number of cases and clients on her books,  the most important of which is the one she’s working on for her mentor, Ollie Kovak, whose services are used regularly by the high-end Huston law firm of Logan & Locke.  Brock Logan, well known for defending wealthy people accused of serious crimes, is defending Gavin Quinn, a doctor accused of murdering his wife, and Ollie has asked Kira to meet him at Logan’s house in order to review an important break in the case.  Kira hasn’t been there long when all hell breaks loose;  someone comes in the front door, shoots and kills Ollie, shoots at Logan and Kira and then gathers up as many of their phones, files and laptops as possible before getting out.
Though shaken, Kira is determined not to fall apart, and equally determined to find out who killed Ollie and why.  The stolen laptops and files must mean that the killer was after information relating to the Quinn case – but Kira has no idea what exactly Ollie had been working on before his death or what information he’d wanted to pass on to her that evening.  The one thing she’s does know is that finding answers to both those questions is imperative if she’s to get to the truth.
Logan asks Kira to take over from Ollie on the Quinn case, and after she agrees, informs her that now she’s part of his team, she’ll be accorded the same sort of round-the-clock protection as the rest of them.  Kira isn’t at all happy about this; she has to be able to act independently and spontaneously in order to do her job so the last thing she needs is to be followed around by guys who “look like the Avengers.”  But she agrees reluctantly, intending to bend the rules if necessary.
Kira’s detail is headed up by Jeremy Owen, who has just returned from a job that went from bad to worse and had been hoping for a bit of down-time after his long-haul flight. He’s bummed when he realises that isn’t going to happen, but he’s a professional and he takes his responsibilities very seriously. He immediately senses his new protectee wants nothing to do with him – but that’s tough. He’s got a job to do and he’s going to do it whether she likes it or not.
When Kira gets over being miffed at needing a bodyguard, she soon realises it’s something she can use to her advantage, getting Jeremy to accompany her to various places she needs to go and finding him to be an extremely useful sounding board for her ideas and theories. They develop a good working relationship as they work to track down clues and put pieces of the puzzle together to eventually realise that the murder of Ava Quinn and impending trial has opened a whole other, much more dangerous, can of worms.
While part of the narrative is told from Kira and Jeremy’s points of view, we also get the PoV of Charlotte Spears, the detective assigned to investigate Ollie’s murder. She’s tough, no-nonsense and clever; dedicated to her job, she’s a terrific investigator and someone who trusts her instincts and weighs things up carefully. She’s frustrated by the fact that there are things Kira obviously isn’t telling her, but she doesn’t let that get in the way of doing her job or of being prepared to accept the information Kira does give her and look into it. I liked the way we’re shown her coming to many of the same conclusions as Kira but via a different route.
So… I liked the investigation plotline and I liked that the story features two independent and very determined women, but the book falls down when it comes to the romance, which is perfunctory at best, superfluous at worst. There’s no chemistry between Jeremy and Kira and no sexual tension; their first kiss happens completely out of the blue with no build up or reasoning behind it other than that they’ve both acknowledged that the other person is attractive, and the sex scene towards the end seemed to have been thrown in mostly to satisfy the demands of the ‘romance’ part of the ‘romantic suspense’ label. Quite honestly, I’d much rather read a mystery/suspense novel without a romance (provided I knew that’s what I’d signed up for) than one in which the romance is so poorly developed and executed.
In fact, this is something I’ve been finding more and more often in romantic suspense novels lately. With a few notable exceptions (Rachel Grant and Loreth Anne White come to mind) nearly all those I’ve read recently contain romances barely deserving of the label. I like a good suspense plot, but I expect a good balance between the romance and the suspense in a romantic suspense novel, and that’s not something I’ve found very often of late – not in m/f romantic suspense, anyway. In m/m, however, it’s a different story, because some of the best romantic suspense around right now is to be found there. Seven of Spades, Fish Out of Water, Big Bad Wolf, Hazard and Somerset – to name but a few – are all terrific series and strike the right balance between the two elements, perhaps because the romances get to develop over several books rather than just one single title.
Anyway.
I’m giving Her Deadly Secrets a qualified recommendation because even though the romance was a non-starter, I really did enjoy the plot and the way the author gradually pulled everything together. I’ll continue to read Laura Griffin’s books because I like her writing and there’s no questioning her skill in constructing complex, intriguing plotlines and creating likeable characters. I’ll just have to remember to adjust my expectations when it comes to the romance part of this particular romantic suspense series.
Pulbication Date: July 2019
Her Deadly Secrets is the second book in Laura Griffin's "Wolf Security" series.
Let me just say that I loved this book, and it was such a wonderful surprise to see Fiona Glass from Thread of Fear as the sketch artist who showed up to draw the description of the suspect who killed Kira's boss.
This book was intense.
The characters, writing, and story-line were spot on.
But, what I loved the most about this story was that Kira Vance was an ordinary girl trying to make a living.
She spent more money on her PI equipment (cameras, binoculars, listening equipment, etc,) than she did on rent, food, or clothing.
I loved how she would go head-to-head with the cops, lawyers, and even her security detail in order to maintain her independence and do her job.
Jeremy Owen has just come off a brutal and bad op only to be assigned to be the lead in Kira's security detail.
He's tired, frustrated, and needs some downtime, but once he meets Kira the attraction is instant.
Hell or High water he's in this until the end to make sure that Kira is safe and secure.
The attraction between Kira and Jeremy is mutual.
She wants him as much as he wants her, but the protocol must be obtained in order to make sure that Kira survives the REAL threat against her.
She's the one who investigates this case and finds all the relevant pieces to solve the crime, and she's the one who finds justice for her boss who was killed right in front of her.
My only regret is that I didn't get to see Kira's fireman brother meet Jeremy.
I think they would have hit it off nicely.
Great story!
Great series!
I can't wait to read the next book in this series because Trent, Skylar, and Hayes need their HEA.
Laura Griffin can do no wrong in my book. Each of her releases are just so well written that you can't stop flipping the pages, and as someone who prefers her Romantic Suspense to be romance heavy, I honestly don't notice the absence. Our spunky heroine Kira is a PI and when her boss is murdered she is saddled with security and unfortunately trying to find out what got him killed and what it has to do with the case she is working. There was never a dull moment in this book and I liked how we see Kira doing actual on-ground work. This book was really the Kira show, even though we do have a romantic interest for her.
In most books we don't see the h/H consider ethical dilemmas and they just give in to the heat. In this, I liked how the hero was so principled, his job was to protect the heroine and not sleep/get involved with her. All in all another winner from Laura.
This is the second installment in the Wolfe Security series. This was by far a better read than the first one (Desperate Girls). I enjoyed the elements of this plot but am not really into the romantic aspect that these books contain. I guess I am not a huge fan of romantic suspense.🤷🏼‍♀️
Song for summary: How to Save a Life by The Fray
This is the second instalment in the Wolfe Security series and Griffin delivers another fast-paced, gripping, and utterly thrilling novel. Full of alpha males, lethal skills, smouldering heat, a fierce heroine, and danger at every turn; Her Deadly Secrets is a breathtaking investigation that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as a young PI races to uncover shocking truths and must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to seek justice.
Another winner from Laura Griffin!
A couple of months ago I read Desperate Girls from this author and I loved it! So of course I was happy when I found out there will be another book.
Here we get a great female lead, broody bodyguard, lots of twists and turns. Overall a great suspenseful novel that will capture your attention and hold it!
This was lighter on the romance but it was still a fun read.
So this series is just about lack of professionalism, hmmmmm? At least the first book paid lip service to professionalism, even if the conflict it posed was next to nonexistent. Here it is nonexistent, to the point where it isn’t discussed even when it clearly needs to be, where it intersects with communication issues but somehow is ultimately irrelevant. I can’t stand this.
Of course, there are callback to previous books:
Erik was watching him closely. Too closely. If Jeremy wasn’t careful, he was going to figure out that this client was getting to him.
HMMMM. WHY MIGHT THIS BE?
LIAM AND TARA, YOU DESERVE BETTER.
The lack of professionalism alone would sink this book. Luckily for me, there is also sloppy writing! The taciturn Jeremy, who is described as silent and unresponsive, responds! The writing describes “the chess game” Kira and Jeremy are playing, but there is no chess game, because the dialogue barely goes beyond the level of polite acquaintanceship (which makes the whole relationship feel ungrounded)! This juxtaposition, which made me want to throw things!
Every street was choked with cars, but the sidewalks were nearly deserted, even during lunch hour. It had taken her a full week to figure out where everyone was, and she’d had to get off her bike to do it.
The downtown tunnels were one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
How can they be a well-kept secret if the sidewalks are empty of people? DO EXPLAIN.
And listen: I know barely anything about guns, but I’m pretty sure silencers are incapable of hiding the sound of a gunshot from someone in the next room; also, how would someone intercept a pizza delivery? Do you tap the phone, meet the delivery in the lobby, and pretend to be the customer? Do you sign up as an UberEats driver and hope your target orders something? How do you find out about the order? How do you find out the room number? How do you get around the person whose job it is to deliver the pizza?
This sort of sloppiness pervades the writing. It means the entire book feels poorly thought out and unimpressive. It makes me wonder: is Laura Griffin becoming perfunctory, or am I just over her writing?
I think I've just read too many crime dramas lately and this one was good but just didn't hold my attention like others have. Kira is a PI working on a case when her boss is gunned down suddenly and she must unravel the case on her own. Fortunately the security company hired to protect her features handsome and virile Jeremy to whom she is immediately attracted. Lots of possible leads but it took a long time to make any progress (or at least it seemed to me) and the romance took up more of my time than the actual plot-line surrounding the murder. I know there are lots of Laura Griffin fans out there and I think I will have better luck with her first series that's gotten really good reviews!
This was okay - not as good as her Tracers series but a solid suspense book. I do like the Wolfe security team - slow in places.
This second installment of the Wolfe Security series explores the challenges of stopping a killer when the motives are unknown.
Kira Vance's life is far from perfect. She's struggling PI, who is good at her job, but not good enough to pay the bills. A tragic event involving the death of her friend and fellow PI, Oliver "Ollie" Kovak, gives her an opportunity to change the course of her life. So long as she isn't killed in the process.
With a prominent lawyer, Brock Logan, losing his key investigator and entering a critical trial just days away, he hires Kira to help his team. While she greatly accepts the opportunity, she has one focus, finding who killed Ollie. And as she begins to unravel the mystery, she discovers the hit on her friend may have ties to Logan's trial.
Joining Kira in her search for the killer is Jeremy Owens, who is hired along with his Wolfe Security team, to protect Logan and his key employees. Kira is a bit bull headed, making Jeremy's job a lot more difficult, but I think with time, he comes to appreciate her tenacity. There's also some chemistry that builds between them, and I felt how they handled it was honest and realistic.
I was impressed with Kira's investigative ability, she seemed to be one step ahead of the police detectives, Charlotte Spears and Ken Phan. With time, they come to understand that they are on the same side and do a better job of sharing information, which is a change from how things kicked off. There isn't much evidence to work with, given the number of robberies and deaths along the way, but Kira is resourceful. Once the killer(s) become known, it is just a matter of stopping them before more people get hurt - not an easy task as this book proves.
Overall, this was a well-plotted story, combining a mystery and romance in a logical way (not too rushed). I also enjoyed the paring of Kira and Jeremy, they felt like a good match, who could make the difference in their jobs, work for the long term. I'm looking forward to more in this series at each member of Wolfe Security finds their own HEA.
Less than twenty-four hours is what it took me to devour Griffins latest work, Her Deadly Secret, book number two in the Wolfe Security series.
P.I. Kira Vance finds herself personally involved with a murder case. The law firm she's been working with has decided that an added security detail is needed to not only her and the lawyers she'd been working with not only safe but alive as well.
As always, Griffin writes smart, capable female leads who are always in charge and ready to get the job done. This is why she has been and will always remain on my one-click-list.
Her Deadly Secret is an all-encompassing dynamic read that is sure to skyrocket to the top of any list this summer.
Her Deadly Secrets was an exciting and intense romantic suspese novel that made me feel like I was a part of the investigation myself.
There are many moving parts and multiple points of view in Her Deadly Secrets, it was told in third person, but I was always able to navigate whose head I was inside of at the time. The multiple points of view actually made the story more exciting because we the reader have more information that each of the characters individually.
One my favorite things is when a couple falls in love while being chased by a killer and although this couple hadn't said they loved each other I was more than happy with the way their relationship played out. It wasn't the main focus of the story, because hello a murder is after you!!
Her Deadly Secrets is actually the second book in the Wolfe Security series and although you can read this a standalone I will go back and read the first book and continue on with this series and find out what happens with the rest of the Wolfe Security team.
This romantic suspense series intriguing, guile and a must read for anyone who loves murder with a side or romance when reading.
